Aerial Offensive
By Bates, Monson
Downs Eagles 42-0
Eazle Point Vale high's
potent Vikings thrust through
the air Saturday with mighty
effectiveness to pillage Eagle
Point and move into Oregon
championship football finals
for the fourth time in five
seasons.
The Vikings, defending A-2
titlists, featured the throwing
of halfback Bob Bates and
snaring of another halfback,
Stan Monson, to smash the
Eagles 42 to 0 in the state
semi-final joust. Now unbeat
en in 23 straight games, Vale
goes against Willamina next
week end in the 1958 titular
game.
Both power and passing
but mostly the aerial game
made the Viking offense go.
Bates pitched four touchdown
tosses, three to Monson for
46, 19 and 33 yards and one
to charles Becker for 49. Bat
tering Dick Fulwyler socked
two yards for one TD and
ran four extra points. Bob
Johnson chucked to Bill
Jacobs for 26 yards and the
other six-point score. Bates
thumped true on two conver
sion kicks.

sharply with its own assault,
it stymied the Eagle offensive
with the charging of its mas
sive line. Only once did Eagle
Point surge in sustained at
tack. That lone penetration
of Viking territory in the
waning moments carried to
the 32-yard line. Then a fum
ble lost the ball.
The visiting East Oregon-
ians got most of the breaks
in the game.
Vale, noted for a crushing
ground offensive, made al
most two-thirds of its yardage
yesterday through the air, 257
of its total 378.
Bates had 12 completions
in 19 throws (nine for 12 in
the opening half) for 231
aerial yards.
The Viks pushed 62 yards
off the opening kick to gain
their first TD. They fought
in four plays to the Eagle 45-
yard stripe. Bates then lost to
the 46 but on the next play
threw to Monson behind the
EP defenders and the receiver
raced away to score.
Ground Power Pays
Vale parlayed its ground
power to a touchdown the
next time it got the ball. Clip
ping on the kick-off return
had put Eagle Point back on
its 10. Four plays made only
four yards. After Bill Mc-
Clure's punt, the Vikings took
over on the Eagle 40. Six
plays marched the ball to the
two-yard line. Fulwyler bang
ed the rest of the way.
The first quarter ended 14
to 0
Third Viking series with the
ball saw them held on- the
Eagle 32-yard line. Eagle
Point was estrained again for
four yards in three plays
Dave Huffman was forced to
quickly get a punt away and
it netted just seven yards.
Vale took over on the EP
43. In six plays it had the
ball on the 11 but Roger
Hooper busted through to
dump Becker for an eight
yard loss op the 19. With
fourth down coming up the
Eagles seemed to have the
east Oregonians stopped. But
Bates heaved to Monson for
a score.
Hold On Six
Given another attacking op
portunity Vale struck out
from its 36 and moved stead
ly down the field. This time
the stiffening Eagles held. A
fourth down pass was incom
plete. Eagle Point took over
on its own six-yard, ran two
plays and the half concluded
21 to 0.
It's third scrimmage try of
the third quarter produced
Val'e fourth touchdown of the
chilly afternoon. Eagle- Point
had punted after making only
seven yards off the second
half kick-off and the Viks had
the ball on the Eagle 46. Beck

Vale later in the quarter
got the ball on the Eagle 29
on Roger Bement's pass inter
ception but Eagle Point gain
ed possession again four
downs later on its 21. The
Viks, after stemming the EP
effort and forcing another
boot, had the pigskin on the

the ball after three uncaught
passes.
Monson Iniercepis
Tow plays later Vale grab
bed another opportunity deep
in the Eagle area. Monson
robbed a throw by EP's Bill
Turner and the Viks had the
ball on the 30. They hit to the
28 and were penalized to the
33. A pass misfired but a flat
throw to Monson connected.
The receiver spun out of the
arms of Jim Nease and romp
ed down the sidestripe to the
goal.
Last Vale TD came mid
way through the closing per
iod with Johnson and Jacobs
teamed.
Eagle Point charged up the
field after receiving the kick
off and in seven plays had
journeyed from their 28 to
the Vale 32. That's when the
fumble spoiled any scoring
hopes. Vale's Bill Eltering re
covered. The Vikings ran four
plays and the game was over.
Eagle defense, spurred by
the sparkling play of McClure,
was tougher in the second
half. It allowed Vale only 39
yards in the second half com
pared to 82 in the first. More
passes dropped incomplete in
the second half but four did
find their mark and three
went for touchdowns.
The Eagles netted just 46
scrimmage yards in the first
half, 29 of them in rushing
Fulwyler Gains 68
The Eagles allowed Ful
wyler, Vale's top ground
gainer, 53 net yards in the
first two quarters but held
him to 13 over the last two
periods for 68 yards on 22
carries. Bill Skeeters netted
32 yards in 13 packs for Eagle
Point and McClure 27 in 10
tries.
Victory was the 11th this
fall for Vale and the loss was
the first for Eagle Point in
A-2 competition. The Eagles
ended their season with a 9-2
record, bowing only to Vale
and A-l Crater.

Tiger Jones
Beat Rory
New York -(UPD Middle,
weight Ralph (Tiger) Jones,
who upset Rory Calhoun by
the margin of a foul-round
Friday night, may meet top
contender Carmen Basilio at
Syracuse, N.Y. in January.
Promoter Norman Roths
child announced he had offer
ed ex-champion Basilio $35,
000 to meet Jones at the Syra
cuse Memorial auditorium in
a non-televised bout.
Unranked Jones, a 9-5 un
derdog, won a unanimous de
cision over lOth-rated Cal
houn of White Plains, N.Y., in
their TV-radio 10-rounder at
Madison Square Garden, after
slugger Calhoun had been
penalized his best round, the
eighth, on a low-blow foul.
Warned for Low Blows
The Tiger of St. Albans,
N.Y., was low man in the bet
ting because of suspicions
that he was "washed up."
Thirty- year-old Jones,
who weighed 158V2 pounds to
Calhoun's 163, was awarded
the verdict on a rounds basis:
5- 4-1, 5-3-2, 5-4-1, after referee
Ray Miller's eight-round for
feiture ruling for a low left
hook.
Miller had warned Rory for
low blows in the fifth round.
The decision was well re
ceived by the estimated 3,000
fans, most of whom had been
trying to root home the un-der-Tiger
during the bruising
fight. However, a poll of 14
sports writers at the ringside
favored Calhoun, 5-4-1, and
United Press International
had 24-year-old Rory ahead,
6- 4.

Fish Lake
Restocked
Ashland Fish lake, treated
this fall to rid it of trash fish
infestation, was stocked on
Oct. 28 with 102,000 rainbow
trout, Cole Rivers, Grants
Pass, state game commission
biologist, informed Ashland
chapter of the Izaak Walton
league here last week.
Rivers said that the finger
lings averaged 4Vi inches in
length. The lake will be open
to fishing next spring. It is
believed the rainbow will be
8-11 inches long by that time.
Treatment of the lake to rid
it of roach was begun in late
September with the main ope
ration on Oct. 1. Ashland skin
divers Dick Smith and Tad
Gandee were employed to put
the toxic chemical rotenone
into springs at the bottom of
the lake by hose.
Poisoning was highly suc
cessful. Rivers told Walton-
ians. Thorough inspection of
the lake later in October
failed to locate a single living
fish, Rivers said. He said that
on Oct. 10 a test was mide
with a box of live trout. The
fish lived only three hours in
the still toxic water. Another
test was made on Oct. 21 and
these fish lived several days.
