Emphysema
Hundreds of people ask me
what to do about emphysema,
and I'm sorry to say that I

Dr. Airare and as a re

able to aerate the blood as
efficiently as they should do.
Many people probably were
born to have emphysema, and
others have developed ,it in
the course of a lifetime of
asthma.
Many have what we call a

Leona S. My husband and
have been married two
years and have a new baby.
We are happy, but we have
had quite a few quarrels on
one s u b j e c t my father-in-law.
The old man really gets my
goat. He is European and
sticks to the ways of his
country. He expects women to
serve him. When he comes
home, his wife caters to him
hand and foot. If everything
is not just right he bellows
and his wife looks terrified of
him.
I hate to see all this, but it
is even worse when he expects
it of me. He visits us every
day and expects the same at
tentions from me that his
wife gives him. He wants to
be waited on even if I'm
busy with the baby. I've told
him he's welcome, but he
must help himself if he wants
something to eat. As a result
he is furious at me and so
is my husband and my
mother-in-law.
John S. - I know that my
father is annoying and that
his habits are different from
ours. But all the same he is
my father and I think Leona
owes him respect.
To my father, it is a ter
rible thing for a man to have
any responsibilities in the
house. He thinks I am insane
when he sees me helping in
the house or sometimes mak
ing my own breakfast. It
doesn't mean anything to me
and I don't ask Leona to serve
me like that. I only want her
to show my father hospitality
and politeness.
My father is set in his ways
and just can't see pur way of
doing things. He isn't going to
change. Leona should be will
ing to give in for the sake of
peace in the family. My father
is a good man at heart and his
other two daughters - in - law

sides of the neck are con
tracted. These people always
have trouble getting their
breath because their lungs are
always expanded as far as
possible. Many of these people
are always wheezing a bit.
For some, every breath taken
means an effort. Often I can
recognize one of these per
sons at a glance by the anxious
look on his perhaps slightly
bluish face. It is bluish be
cause the blood is not as red
as it should be; it hasn't been
well aerated.
Naturally, one cannot give
such a man back good and
normal lungs. Many of these
people could probably help
themselves a bit by quitting
heavy smoking, and some in
the earlier years could have
been helped by someone who
could have taught them how
to avoid attacks of asthma. If
consideration are always in
order, regardless of national
custom.
Any man who expects a
woman to give up tending her
infant in order to perform a
task that he can perform for
himself shows that he has
little feeling for the decen
cies of human behavior. This
man tries to justify his ac
tions by claiming it is the
way of the old country and
that it is a better way, but
this is nonsense. We are cer
tain that many of the stern
men of the old school showed
the utmost gentleness and
consideration in their deal
ings with women.
It appears to us that the
"old man" is a childish bully.
However, as John points out,
there is probably little that
can be done to change him at
his age. Childish bullies are
often easily handled if one
makes up one's mind not" to
get exasperated. Leona may
be able to win him over by a
few easy gestures and a little
joshing. She'll probably find
if she treats him exactly like
a child, occasionally prepar
ing a special treat or surprise
for him he'll go away molli
fied. He is probably easily
distracted f ram his peeves.
John might try letting his
father know that they enjoy
having him visit, but aren't
able to treat him like a formal
guest every day of the week.
