Perhaps we'd better talk a j
little m this space today about
foreign affairs. Some interest
ing situations are shaping up
in the news.
For example:
West Berlin and the Anglo-
Egyptian Sudan.

mitted to happen in a world
supposedly run by reasoning
people, but DID happen.
- West Berlin is a little island
of Western freedom entirely
surrounded by communist
slavery.

much too long to be gone
into in detail here.
It started at Yalta, where
we turned over much of mid
Europe to Russia, presumably
in an effort to get her into
the war with Japan. When
the Germans surrendered,
Germany was divided into
four occupation zones tne
American, the British, the
French and the Russian. Ber
lin, the capital, although en
tirely surrounded by Russian
occupied territory, was also
divided into four zones - Brit
ish. French, American and
Russian.
- This impossible situation
still exists.
IT REMAINS a festering
sore in international rela
tions for a perfectly simple
reason. West Berlin has be
come an Island of Western
ir Miternrise orosoerity and
relative happiness in a sea of
rnmmunist misery.
. That situation gripes Rus
sia. It gripes her particularly
herause the highest ambition
of the poor devils of Germans
who are compelled to live in
communist East Germany is
to get over into West Berlin
and live happily ever after
wards. . That doesn't look good for
rommunism. So Russia is per
petually seeking (without ac
tually going to snooting wan
in make West Berlin such a
hot potato that the Allies (to
use a World War 2 term) wiu
Hrnn it and eet out.
That's the long and the
short of it.
llfHAT of the Anglo-Egyp-
tian Sudan?
That also is too long to be
gone into in detail here.
IT BOBS into the news be
cause of what is known in
diplomatic language as a
"coup" that has just taken
place. ("Coup" is a French
word that has a wide range of
meanings. Among other
things, it means a SUDDEN
RT-nW. French is the lan
guage of international diplo
macy, and so sudden develop
ments have come to be known
among the diplomats as
"coups.")
" In this particular coup, a
desert chieftain has seized
power in the Sudan. There is
a possibility that he may have
done so to keep Nasser from
grabbing the Sudan as a part
of his United Arab Republic,
which is his baby. He hopes
to use the United Arab Re
public as a stepping stone to
his goal of becoming another
Hitler or Mussolini or Stalin
or what have you.

the Sudan is tempting to
Nasser, take a look at your
map. The SUDAN CON
TROLS THE HEADWATERS
OF THE NILE.
The Nile river is Egypt.
Without the waters of the
Nile, Egypt would be ALL
desert instead of being only
part desert.
It should be added that
Nasser wants ALL OF AFRI
CA. So does Russia. Nasser
wants all of Africa in order to
make him a very much bigger
big shot. Russia wants all of
Africa FOR COMMUNISM.
Without the Sudan, it will be
harder to gain possession of
all of Africa. ,
Thats' about the long and
the short of the Sudan business.

Meet at SOC Nov. 22

meeting in Churchill hall at
Southern Oregon college Sat
lirdav. Nov. 22. Dr. Herbert
Cecil, SOC music department
staff member, has announced.
Music teachers from Jack
son, Klamath, Lake, Jose
phine, and Douglas counties
are expected to attend. ,
The organization is con
cerned with all musical activi-
ties in the public schools and
is especially concerned witn
the organization of the annual
snrine music contests.
