Schleighs Return Home

ford Schleigh spent last. week
end in Salem, where they vis
ited Mrs. Schleigh's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. John Peters, for
mer Medford residents. Peters
at one time owned a bicycle
shop there. They also visited
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Vin
cent, a sister and brother-in-law
of Mrs. Schleigh.
They went on to Dallas
where Mrs. Schleigh lived
when she was a girl and drpve
by her old school and other
familiar buildings. '.
On their way home they
stayed overnight in Eugene
with friends and former resi
dents of this area, Mr. and
Mrs. Lawrence Dau.
A flue fire at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Klassen
Tuesday evening did no dam
age. The fire department
stood by until danger had
passed.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hag
gard are in Los Angeles and
will spend the winter east of
Los Angeles, toward the des
ert, when they get settled.
Dan Cook, uncle of the Rev.
Marvin Lumley, left Monday
for his home in Visalia, Calif.,
after spending several days
as guest of the Rev. and Mrs
Lumley.
The Rev. and Mrs. Marvin
Lumley will be in Ocean
Lake, Ore., the first of next
week, were they will attend
a preachers convention.
The missionary society of
the First Nazanne church
held a meeting Nov. 4 with a
pot luck lunch at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford
White. There were 16 adults
and six children in attend
ance. Robert Bayne, study
chairman for the group, was
the speaker. The study book
for the year is entitled "The
Nation and the Isles." Mrs.
Elmer Coffman was cohostess.
A meeting of the Sunday
school teachers of the church
was also held at the home of

turate. When the person is in
an acute crisis of porphyria,
if some of his urine is placed
in sunlight, it is Ikely to turn
red. In1 minor forms of the
disease, an expert can recog
nize small amount of porphy
rins with special technics.
My good friend, Dr. Geof
frey Dean of Port Elizabeth,
South Africa, has spent much
of his life studying this dis
ease. He has found that in
South Africa it is common. He
has traced every case he has
seen back seven generations
to a Hollander who came out
about 1700 and married and
had a large family. In certain
branches of this family, many
of the people have porphyria.
Now, when Dr. Dean sees a
patient with porphyria, he can
quickly find his place in the

with Glen Yorton, Sunday
school superintendent, in
charge. The church is sponsor
ing a contest to stimulate Sun
day school attendance.
A social evening for the
Junior class of the Nazarene
church was held at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Homer
at Oregon orchard last Satur
day. There were six young
people and four leaders pres
ent and despite the cold wea
ther they had wjeners roasted
on a bonfire outside, with all
the trimmings. Mrs. Clifford
White helped Mrs. Homer
serve.
This coming Saturday, Mrs.
Homer will host the primary
class at the church. Games
will be played and refresh
ments will be served, with
Mrs. Marvin Lumley helping.

the chemistry of the porphy
rins.
Narcolepsy and Calalplexy
Every so often someone asks
me what is narcolepsy and
what is cataplexy. Narcolepsy
is a curious disease in which
often the victim will suddenly
become so terribly drowsy
that he may go to sleep even
in an important business con
ference. Some automobile ac
cidents are probably due to
a narcoleptic's having gone to
sleep at the wheel. Most of
the narcoleptics I have seen
came from families in which
there was some epilepsy. The
treatment usually consists in
giving drugs of a type which
tends to keep people awake.
As I write this, a man tele
phones to say that his wife
who used to sleep most of
each day, now, with the med
icine, gets up in the morning
and does her housework.
Cataplexy is a curious dis
ease in which the person,
when he laughs or gets excit
ed, or is suddenly surprised,
may get so weak in the knees
that he may even fall down.
The great French writer, Sten
dal, tells in his autobiograhy
about a time when he thought
he was deeply in love with
a beautiful actress. One day
he ran into her on the street
and, in his excitment, almost
fell down. People who suffer
from cataplexy may have to
learn never to laugh or even
giggle. I do not know of any
good treatment for the dis
ease. If I had it or had nar
colepsy, the first thing I would
do would be to get electro
encephalograms made. If they
showed signs of epilepsy, I
would try the effect of an
anti-convulsive drug, such as
Dilantin.
