Dope Peddlers Use
Israel as Short Cut
To Egyptian Markets

continue to use Israel as a
short cut to their Egyptian
markets
The change from Turkish
to British to Israeli rule of
Palestine has not deterred the
smugglers, who travel from
Lebanon, Syria, Greece and
Turkey to Egypt by way of
Israel.
Israeli police report they
are slowly gaining on the nar
cotics smugglers, although the
results of their daily, or night
ly, raids are still relatively
unimpressive.
In 1950, police netted 838
pounds of hashish and 24
pounds of opium. Last year,
they grabbed 2,330 pounds of
hashish and 1,323 pounds of
opium. They also found
small amount of heroin, a late
arrival in the Middle East nar
cotics market.
Addiction Up
Almost this entire amount
was headed for Egypt, which
is estimated to use 1,543,500
pounds of narcotics a year.
Israel s total estimated con
sumption is 88 pounds a year.
However, addiction in Israel
has risen slightly over the
years, and it is now estimated
that there are between 3,500
and 7,500 addicts in the coun
try.
Authorities point out that
even if addiction were to dis
appear completely in Israel,
the traffic would continue
across its borders until the
neighboring states take deter
mined steps to wipe out the
smuggling
When the Israelis occupied
the Gaza Strip during the
1956 Sinai campaign, they
found in a police station more
than 20 pounds of unmarked
dope. International law re
quires all drugs to be marked,
with details of its confisca
tion, if it is contraband. The
discovery indicated to Israeli
authorities that the Gaza po
lice were- themselves dealing
in hashish and opium. Resi
dents of the Strip confirmed
that the dope was used to
bribe or reward, informers
and spies.
Peddlers Ignored
The United Nations emer
gency force stationed on the
Israel-Egyptian border is not
equipped to deal with such
matters and ignores dope ped
dlers entering Egyptian territory.
The Israeli police claim the
Arab governments are not se
riously concerned about the
narcotics problem except, pos
sibly, in Egypt, where drug
addiction has reached a scale
that could hamper that na
tion's economic and social
progress.
The police also claim that
Lebanon, the area's main
source of opium and hashish,
will do nothing about the
drug traffic. They claim the
drug business involves so
many important government
officials that no Lebanese po
lice chief can tackle the
problem.

at the "war" price of 26.9
cents per gallon here today.
Most dealers at company

back to around 33.9 cents per
gallon for regular and other
