A Poor Nervous Inheritance

the hilt that

few people

test, while many others say,
"How right your are, as I have
every reason to know be
cause my family is full of peo
ple with either definite men
tal trouble or else alcoholism,
eccentricity, poor adjustment,
an inability ever to work, an
inability . to get along with
people, or hypochondriasis,
'a bunch of nerves'."
A fine, well-eGucated wom
an writes me from Australia
to say that she is much inter
ested in this problem because
of the tragedy in her life. As
a girl she heard whispers
about an uncle who was an
alcoholic, but, naturally, it did
not occur to her that this rela
tive's tendency to drink could
affect her future in any way.
Years later when she married,
and a mentally abnormal child
was born to her, she did what
so many of us do when a
tragedy like this comes to us,
she went to her eldest rela
tives to learn something
about her nervous inheritance.
Then she learned that her par
ents had done what so many
do, and had kept the closet
door closely shut on the fam
ily skeletons. Her mother ad
mitted that her brother (the
alcoholic) had at times been
criminally insane a schizo
phrenic who had spent time
in a mental hospital and had
barely escaped spending time
in a penitentiary.
All Suffering
This uncle had nine broth
ers and sister, all intelligent,
but all suffering from nervous
troubles. Their mother in her

melancholic, and her mother
(my correspondent's great
grandmother) had also been
depressed and had committed
suicide. On her mother's side
of the family my correspond
ent had first and second cous
ins who were schizophrenic.
Two committed suicide, and
several more were so queer
and eccentric that they be
came recluses.
My correspondendent car
ried an able man who, very
unfortunately, had some nerv
ous tendencies in his family.
His father, who was an ec
centric, ( had one brother al
coholic and another insane.
My correspondent's husband's
mother had an uncle- who
"wasn't quite right'.' and nev
er worked. Among the hus
band's family there were sev
eral hypochondriacs persons
with an abnormal fear of dis
ease. One of the husband's
oothers was mentally retard
ed, and another was so handi
capped mentally that he was
never able to accomplish
much. One cousin of the hus
band was born without a
head. In both my correspond
ent's and her husband's fam
ilies there is a tendency to
squint.
I am, sure any intelligent
layman can see what a terrible
thing it was for a woman with
an inheritance such as her
husband had.
Of the three children born
to them, one was "never
right." From birth she was
difficult to handle; often she
screamed; often she went into
rages; often at night she would
not go to sleep, and often she
refused to eat. She is now in
a school for abnormal chil
dren. Two other children so
far show only the family ten
dency to cross eyes.
Should She Tell Them?
As my correspondent now
asks, when her two children,
who seem to be mentally nor
mal, grow up, and begin to
think of marrying, how much
should she tell them? Should
she tell them what can hap
pen to some of their children,
especially if they marry (as
she did) someone who also
comes of stock much affected
by nervous diseases? Or
should she try to spare them
anxiety and unhappiness as
her parents did with her, so
unwisely?
I think it obvious that her
children have the right later
to know the dangers they will
run if they get married and
start to have a family. Cer
tainly, when the time comes,
these children and the persons
they are thinking of marry
ing should sit down with an
expert genetics counselor at
some university; they should
give him all the facts they can
get about the nervous heredity
on both sides, and then see
what he says about the

dren. As the woman said, "Do
please keep on writing about
this tremendously important
subject of heredity. No mat
ter how many angry letters
you get from people who don't
want to hear a word about
this matter, keep writing to
help those many thousands of
mothers like me who want to
know the facts, even if these
facts tear at our hearts. Give
us all the hope you can, but
do not lie to us. That won't
help us."
So I plan to quote in this
column from wonderful let
ters I am getting from per
sons who tell me that in spite
of the fact that they inherited
a marked tendency to insan
ity a tendency that has dis
tressed them for most of their
lief in the fifties they are
still working at responsible
jobs; they have married and
kept the love of their spouses,
and they feel they have suc
ceeded in life. The person who
gets a bad nervous inheritance
can often fight it to a stand
still; he does not have to lie
down and whine and quit.
