Louise M. I am 23 years
old and I feel like I am 40 be
cause I have had so much
trouble.
I am very much in love with
Karl, a man I've known for a
couple of years. I was foolish
enough to let him know how
much I cared. He said he
wasn't sure whether he loved
me enough to marry me, but
suggested that we have an
affair as a kind of "trial mar
riage." The idea was "if things
worked out" we'd get mar
ried. Well, as far as I could
see everything was working
out very well. Our physical
relationship was a very happy
one. But now Karl says he
doesn't think we could ever
make a successful marriage.
I don't see what went
wrong. I am more in love with
him than ever. We never guar-
reled and I am sure there is
no other girl in the picture.
Karl S.-I have been unable
to convince Louise that there
is more to marriage than the
physical relationship. There
are many other factors to
consider.
For one thing, we are of
different faiths and I know
that would cause trouble.
Louise's family is very much
opposed to me and I know it
would break her heart to
hurt them, in spite of the fact
that right now all she thinks
she wants is me.

There is also the fact that
our interests are very far
apart. Louise claims to be in
terested in lots of the things
I care about - politics, music
and sports but she really
doesn't know much about
them and hasn't made much
effort to learn. I always
dreamed of having a wife who
would share things with me,
I feel our marriage would be
as wrong for Louise as for me.
The Council: Aside from
any moral considerations, the
kind of "trial marriage" Lou
ise and Karl have attempted
is fairly sure 'to result in fail
ure - even if it should end in
legal marriage.
The fact is it is no real
trial. In marriage the two
partners commit themselves
fully. If they approach this
step with . any rationality or
sense of responsibility at all,
they will first try to reach
some resolution of all the fac
tors Karl now sees as so important.
In a case like this one, the
physical relationship takes
over the whole show, and the
partners rarely get to the
stage where they can see
whether they will be able to
live together.
Louise has not had to
wrestle with the problem of
whether she can make a
break with her family or bring
them around to her point of
view.
She has not been forced to
prove she can be a partner to
Karl in his interests, and
Karl has not had to decide
whether he wants her enough
to compromise on his dream
of a wife who would share his
interests.
Probably they have had
few or no social activities with
others during this "trial"
period and have no - idea
whether they can get along
as a couple within a commu
nity.
Louise and Karl should face
the fact that little or nothing
has taken place between them
but physical contact. If they
wish to consider the possibili
ty of marriage, they must
start to do so on an entirely
different-level. In fairness to
one another, they ought to
make this attempt.
