Eugene-flFD-Coach Len Cas

Three key Ducks who did

A block of some 220 re

Medford-Grants Pass High
football game was sold out
in 20 to 25 minutes at the
senior high office here this
morning.
The game is slated for Frl

at stake.
Today's ticket sale here was
scheduled for 7 a.m. and got
underway about 6:50 a.m.
when it was apparent that
more people were on hand
' than there were tickets. Many
persons went away without
tickets.
Ragsdale Crippled
A number of persons were

Medford apparently has lost

this year that the Emerald
Green of old Eugene has been
dropped by that score. Okla
homa started the fad this sea
son by clipping them, 6-0, in a
game which saw Oregon
hailed for its great effort
against the Sooners. Three
weeks ago, underdog Wash
ington State followed with an
other 6-0 shutuout and then
Washington pulled off the
same result as the Ducks lost
their third in a row.
Bears Dethroned
Further up the line, Oregon
State defeated California, 14
8, and snatched first place in
the Rose Bowl race away
from the Bears. Coach Tom
my Prothro's singe wingers,
who never have lost a game
under him at Corvallis, made
it 16 wins on local soil after
putting the tight clamp on
quarterback Joe Kapp.
Washington State took over
third place behind California
by pasting UCLA, 38-20. The
Cougars never were behind.
Southern California tram

Grants Pass and Medford
High school junior varsities
fought to a scoreless tie Sat
urday afternoon on a slow
turf at Grants Pass.
Each club drove deep into
the other's territory three or
four times but could not mus
ter scoring punch. GP got to
the Medford four and the
Tornado to the Cavemen eight
yard line.
Phil Humphreys of Med
ford broke away for a 70
yard run to the GP end zone
but officials ruled he stepped
out of bounds on the 10 yard
line. The Tornado moved to
the eight, was thrown back
for a loss and then yielded the
ball on a fumble.
Bob Custance of Medford
tried a field goal boot with the
ball held on the 27-yard line.
It was wide an short and, in
addition, the Tornado was
penalized for delay of the
game on the play.
Medford won a previous
game between the two jayvee
teams 18 to 0. The game play
ed last Saturday originaly
had been set for this evening
but was postponed because of
conflicting activity at Grants
Fass.

San Francisco-(UPD-The San

With the first half almost

Seattle Ramblers
Rally To Trim SOC
Ashland - Seattle Ramblers
overcame a 12-point first half
deficit Saturday night and
overtook the Southern Oregon
college football team 16 to 12
in, the Myrtle Bowl game at
Coos Bay.
Led by the running of Del
Brood and Laval Meunier, the
Red Raiders "could do no
wrong in the first half. With
its new winged "T" offenses
SOC looked like a new team
over past performances this
year.
The second half showed a
marked difference in all
around play with the excep
tion of the Raider defense who
held the Seattle club on the
four yard line for one full
series of downs.
The Raiders punted when
they got the ball and the Ram
blers drove back to the 15 on
the return run to put the situ
ation on the spot again for
SOC.
Ashlanders in Hole
Southern Oregon was in a
hole the whole second half
except for one time when it
drove to the Rambler 17 only
to lose the ball on downs.
It was after this drive fal
tered that Seattle drove 99
yards after a penalty against
it for the touchdown which
earned the victory.
Brood played his game of
the year for the men of SOC
in picking up 88 yards rush
ing. He had been playing only
in spots this year due to in
juries. Phil Sword and Larry Yar
nell shone on defense with
two pass interceptions each.
Yarnell cut off two drives in
the first half and returned
one of the interceptions for
30 yards. Sword brought one
back for 24 yards and another
for 2 before he lateraled to
Anday Travis who ground out
five more.
Brood scored the first TD
for SOC with only 36 seconds
remaining in the first quarter
from three yards out. The run
ning of Brood, Meunier, and
Larry Maurer set up the tally
in the drive which started on
the SOC 46 yard line.
Double Reverse
In dire need of a first down
with the ball second and 16 on
the Rambler 26 Meunier foul
ed up the pass-expectant de
fense with a double reverse
from left to right that scored
with 11:50 remaining in the
second half.
The Raiders had the ball on
the 21 by virtue of Brood's 21
yard gallop on a previous play
but Jack Brown had a pass in
tercepted as the men of SOC
lost possession.
Seattle after getting no
where on one play fumbled on
the second and SOC recover
ed. Maurer lost six on the
firstx play and then Meunier
came romping around end for
the score.
Lance Locke missed the
conversions on both touch
downs. Seattle drove down to the
four yard line in the third
quarter where the Raider de
fense held four times to gain
possession. Tony Brauner im
mediately punted but the re
turn brought the ball back to
the 15 in SOC territory.
Again SOC held for three
plays but with a fourth down
situation on the six-yard line
and one yard to go for the
first down Seatte's Bob Ly
dum tricked the defense with
a pass to Ed Johnson and the
touchdown. Bill Castrow kick
ed the first of his two conver
sions. Give Safety
In a show of strategy, SOC
was deep in its own territory
on the three yard line when
Brauner downed the ball in
the end zone to give the Ram
blers a safety but also it gave
SOC a free kick from the 20

hay even when the sun does

Although hobbled by injur
ies, Milt Schmidt's skaters
blanked the Toronto Maple
Leafs, 2-0, Sunday night after
bouncing the Detroit Red
Wings, 3-1, in Saturday's TV
game.
The win victories enabled
the Bruins to climb to within
one point of the pace-setting
Montreal Canadiens in the Na
tional Hockey League race.
In Sunday night's only oth
er game, the Red Wings
bounced back to edge the New
York Rangers, 2-1.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
The Buffalo1 Bisons hold a
commanding eight-point lead
their largest of the season
after racking up a pair of
wins during the weekend in
the American Hockey league.
The Bisons, led by scoring
ace Bill Sweeney, clubbed the
Providence Reds, 5-1, Suitday
night, to extend their latest
winning skein to three
games.
In other Sunday night ac
tion, the Springfield Indians
came from behind to trim the
Hershey Bears, 4-2, and the
Rochester Americans, lead by
Cecil Hoekstra's two tallies,
yard line in an effort to get
out of the end of the field.
With three minutes remain
ing the Ramblers had a third
down and four yards to go
situation when Lydum hit on
a pass to end Sam Buckley
who flipped back to Royal
Dotson on a play that netted
27 yards and a first down
on the SOC 48.
A run and 39 yard pass to
Don Alen from Lydum put
the ball in scoring position on
the four yard line where Dot
son carried for the score.
Attempting to get off one
long scoring pass Brown had
an interception spoil all
chances for SOC in the wan
ing minute of play.
