Hatfield Believes
Magic Formula for
Election Discovered

Portland -(UPB- There's a
dilemma facing Oregon Re
publicans these days: What is
the magic formula for getting
elected in a state where most
of the voters are Democrats.
And if the formula is found,
is it naughty or nice to use it?
Republican Mark Hatfield
thinks he has found the
formula and he's using it in
a campaign for the governor
ship in which he feels all the
heavy artillery is on the other
side, on the side of Democratic
incumbent Robert D. Holmes.
Hatfield is looking down
the twin barrels of formidable
field pieces: A heavy Demo
cratic plurality and the active
animosity of organized labor.
. Scholarly Approach
-. The ' young secretary of
state, who has never lost an
election, takes a somewhat
scholarly approach to politics.
He was, after all, a professor
of, political science shortly
after he started to shave. By
the time he was ready to run
for' governor, the cozy domi
nation of Oregon politics by
the GOP was at an end. Hat
field has . to cut a new trail,
writing a new guidebook as
he goes along.
; His formula is to seek elec
tion not as a Republican but
as an Oregonian. He says he
will be a governor for all the
people, not just Republicans,
and that he'll surround him
self with top talent wherever
he finds it, regardless of party
label.
As a scholar in this course,
Hatfield has had some illus
trious mentors. He points to
the unprecedented career of
Earl Warren while he was
governor in California, the
darling of both the parties in
that non-conformist state. And
he points with even more em
phasis to the late Paul Pat
terson, who, as state Senate
president, appointed then
Democratic State Senator
Holmes to chairmanship of
the Senate Education Com
mittee. 'Bring a Democrat'
Hatfield's brain trust puts
it simply: A Republican can't
get elected in Oregon these
days, unless thousands of
Democrats vote for him and
Democrats won't vote for a
Republican party - liner.
Tickets for a recent Hatfield
rally were stamped, "Bring a
Democrat."
But a lot of Republican
regulars who thought they
might ride into the Legisla
ture on v the coattails of a
strong party leader aren't too
happy about the campaign
that they say is designed to
elect only Hatfield.
Some Republicans already
are privately conceding de
feat in. their plans to recap
ture control of the House of
Representatives at Salem.
They partly blame the bi
partisan pitch of the Hatfield's
campaign. If he's elected, they
say, he'll be stuck with a
Democratic Legislature. But
the Hatfield camp says better
that than not get elected at
all.
