Auxiliary Holds Meeting

well, Oregon Lions auxiliary
president, and Mrs. Frank
Christain, district director for
36-E, were guests of honor at
an informal potluck dinner
held recently at the Butte
Falls High school. Butte Falls
Lion auxiliary members were
hostesses.
Following dinner a tour
was made of the Community
hall. Mrs. Conwell said she
was impressed and pleased
that the hostess group has
made the hall their main
project. The majority of aux
iliary monies derived through
out the year go into the com
munity hall fund.
After returning to the
school, Mrs. Conwell gave a
short talk on the state school
for the blind and the institute
that is held every year at Sa
lem. This intitute lasts sev
eral days and teaches parents
of visually handicapped chil
dren how to accept and train
their children to lead a nor
mal life. Parents get a chance
to discuss their problems with
other parents and trained per
sonnel. During the institute,
members of the Oregon Lions
auxiliaries babysit so that par
ents may attend.
Both Mrs. Conwell and Mrs.
Christain were presented
small gifts. Mrs. Conwell re
sides in Portland and Mrs.
Christain in Talent.
The Butte Falls PTA held
its October meeting recently
at the high school. Mrs.
Charles Ferguson, house com
mittee chairman, reported on
numbering houses after in
vestigating the "how to" in
other cities.
The committee met with the
city council and gained their
approval and the project
should be completed by late
November. Thoughts now are
that each home owner will
have to purchase his own
number. This project will be
further discussed at the No
vember meeting.
Mrs. Harry Dalton, Mrs.
Bill Edmondson and Mrs.
Roger Harris were appointed
to act as a budget committee
and asked to meet and set up
a budget for the year.
Announcements made in
cluded the fact that no school
will be held Nov. 10 and 11 as
the 10th is In-Service Day for
all teachers and Tuesday is
Veterans Day.
It also was annunced that
grade school teachers attend
ed a meeting at Jacksonville
causing the postponement of
regular PTA meeting from
Monday night to Thursday
night. L. Stratton, principal
of the grade school, thanked
PTA members for postponing
their meeting so that grade
school teachers would be able
to attend both meetings.
Room count of parents pres
ent gave the sixth and seventh
grades the ice cream party for
the month. Members also vot
ed to give two points for all
fathers and grandmothers at
tending PTA meetings.
Ben Olson Jr., of Portland
recently spent a short time
visiting his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Ben Olson, and sister,
Kathy.
Albert Hoffman recently
visited his son and family, the
Arnold Hoffmans, at Grants
Pass.
A Bloodmoble unit will be
in Butte Falls Nov. 4 at the
Union hall from 3 to 6:30 p.m.
A physcal.exam will be given
prior to takng blood and any
one under the age of 21 wish
ing to give blood must have a
signed statement from heir
parents. Coffee, juice and
doughnuts will be served
those giving blood. Anyone
wishing to give blood is asked
to contact Mrs. Charles (Red)
Capello or Mrs. Keith Scott,
chairman.
Leland Ellis of Medford,
who died recently, was a for
mer resident of Butte Falls
and graduated from the Butte
Falls High school. He also was
a member of the Butte Falls
basketball team that won
state in 1942.
Mr. and Mrs. L. Earle of
Milwaukie, W i s., recently
spent several days visiting
their son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Capello.
While here, the Earles and Ca
pellos visited Crater lake,
Willow Creek dam, Fish lake,
Lake of the Woods, and Dia
mond lake. The Earles plan to
return home via Pikes Peak
and Boulder dam.
The James Olson family,
formerly of Tucson, Ariz., are
new residents in Medford.
James is a son of the Ben
Olsons of Butte Falls.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ca
pello recently became grand
parents when they received
word that a girl had been
born to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ca
pello Oct. 6 at Niagara Falls,
N.Y. The baby has been
named Julie. She weighed

To amend the City Charter of the
City of Medford, Oregon, by
amending Section 165 thereof to
exclude assessment for sidewalk
construction from the petition re
quirements applicable to street
paving.
EE IT ENACTED by the people
of the City of Medford that the
City Charter of the City of Med
ford be amended by amending Sec
tion 165 thereof to read as follows:
"Section 165. The City Council
shall not' have power to levy
special assessments for paving,
other than sidewalk construction,
except upon petition signed by
the owners, according to the
records in the office of the Coun
ty Recorder, of property to an
. aggregate amount of a majority
of the lineal frontage on the
improvement to be made and of
the area within the limits of the
assessment district to be created
therefor."
SECTION 2. That the ballot title
for the measure provided to be
submitted to the legal voters by
said Ordinance No. 7044, as afore
said, and returned to the City Re
corder by the City Attorney is
adopted as hereinafter set forth,
and the following is the number,
ballot title and form in which said
measure shall appear on the ballot:

ordinance to be posted at each
of the places for holding said elec
tion and at three public places
within the City of Medford not
less than two weeks prior to such
election. .
SECTION 5. The City Recorder
is hereby directed to certify the
above mentioned proposed Charter
amendment to the County Clerk of
Jackson County, Oregon, within the
time and as may be provided by
law for the submission of municipal
measures at General Elections, and
to further provide such supplies for
the conduct of such election as may
be required to be supplied by the
City of Medford in connection
therewith. .

Dr. Gelfand was waving the
red flag mainly against a rela
tively new "side effect," that
of infections developing sud
denly and mysteriously in per
sons getting cortisone or
ACTH. This "side effect" is
appearing more frequently as
the drugs are used for more
and more ailments. He didn't
think there was reason for
"any general alarm" yet but
urged that practicing doctors
should be even more careful
than they are.
