Phony stories about the
spirit world and its tenants,
I like.' Bring on the ghosts,
mummies, ghouls and deck
me with wolfbane. But ser
ious retellings of strange oc
currences I put in a class
with headbump readings,
lake monsters, dowsing rods
and the writings on the great
pyramid.

Wednesday night, CBS-TV's
"Armstrong Circle Theater,"
a drama show that deals with
actual happenings, turned to
one of. these honest-to-good-ness
strange occurrence stor
ies, building an entire hour
around a Long Island, N.Y.,
family whose house had the
shakes.
It was a rather curious spec
imen of program, partly dra
matic, partly straight inter
view, mostly very dull. The
family was trotted out and so
were some policemen, all of
whom dutifully talked about
bottles popping, sugar bowls
sliding, plastic globes flying
and dressers falling and it all
sounded like a normal after
noon at anyone's house. Some
how, I couldn't help feeling
that about 20 cents worth of
glue would have fixed every
thing up fine.

Being Investigated
Parris Island, S.C. - (WD -Three
U.S. Marine Corps drill
instructors were under inves
tigation today on charges
they slapped and otherwise
mistreated recruits at this
basic training installation,
scene of . the 1956 "death
march" in which six recruits
lost their lives.
Capt. Joseph C. Bridges,
base public information offi
cer, said the probe involved
an alleged incident in which
young trainees were slapped
by a drill instructor. It was
also charged that members
of a 69-man training platoon
had been forced to pay $10
each to a cadreman.
The three drill instructors
allegedly involved in mis
treatment of recruits were
identified as S. Sgt. Ralph
A. J. Grant of Racine, Wis.,
and Sgts. Willard B. Poss of
Augusta, Ga., and Ronald
Heller of Milwaukee.
