Truman Points To Presidential Aides
New York - (UPD - Former
President Harry S. Truman
aid today that the President
of the United States is in
danger of becoming insulated
from his appointed officials
by a layer of presidential
aides.
In an article entitled "My
View of the Presidency" in
the current issue of Look
Magazine, Truman discussed
the various factors that have
a tendency to erode the influ
ence of the chief executive.
He mentioned the "present
trend toward a huge White
House staff' in particular. An
accompanying chart showed
that Truman's White House

The people of the United
States could save themselves
perhaps a billion dollars a
year if they
would only
learn to recog
nize a quack
the minute
they see one.
To show how
much money
some of these
people "take,"
I happen to
Dr Alvarez know a eirl
whose father for years has
been paying a quack $1,000 a
month to treat her for an in
curable condition. Another
woman tells me she has rec
ently given thousands of dol
lars to a quack medium who,
after gaining her confidence
completely, advised her to buy
a lot of stock from one of
his confederates stock which
she now finds is worthless.
The American Medical As
sociation's Bureau of Investi
gation, headed by Oliver
Field, knows well the quacks
of the United States. Field has
a file of information on every
one of them, and hence there
is no need for a person's being
fleeced by a supposed doctor.
Sometimes when an old pa
tient of mine comes in to tell
me that, after agreeing to be
operated on by a certain man,
he got suspicious of him be
cause of his demand for cash
in advance, I call Fields to
ask if he knows the supposed
doctor, and he practically al
ways said, "Oh yes," and goes
on to tell me perhaps that the
fellow is really an old confi
dence man who has found
the medical racket safer .and
more remunerative than his
old game.
How To Spot Quack
In "Today's Health" for
September, Fields tells briefly
how to spot a quack. 1) The
man usually says he has a
secret formula; 2) he guaran
tees a quick cure; 3) he adver
ties in the newspapers or dis
tributes thousands of leaflets,
or he shows testimonials. Of
ten nowadays he call his den
of thieves a clinic, or a re
search institute. If he claims
to cure cancer, he is always
complaining that the doctors
will not investigate his "cure,"
or give him the credit he de
serves. Suspects Held in
Dynamite Blasts
Portland -(UPD- Police are
holding two young suspects
and sought a third in connec
tion with a series of dynamit
ings and shooting here during
the week end.
Jailed on charges of unlaw
ful use of explosives with in
tent to injure persons and
property were Roger H. Mob
ley, 23, of Beaverton, and
George Edward Layman, 19,
of Portland.
Police were questioning the
youths about dynamite explo
sions near two buildings, the
attempted dynamiting of an
unoccupied automobile and
the shooting of three cars.
Police said Layman told them
he and Mobley had been at
a party. '

historian, educator and au
thor, died here Monday night.
He was defeated by Dr.

He always says the doctors
are afraid of him as a com
petitor, and hence the Amer
ican Medical Association is
persecuting him. If you go to
him with a cancer, beware if
he says surgery and x-ray
treatment are worse than use
less, and will do more harm
than good.
Experts on quackery tell
me that one of the most dang
erous things a person can do
is to go to a so-called hospital
or clinic which advertises
that the doctors there treat
and cure a certain .type of
disease, such as piles or rectal
troubles, or ruptures, or dis
eases of men. I have seen a
number of persons who had
been to such a jlace, and were
told that they must immediat
ly have an operation for piles
or they would get cancer.
Rallying To Defenie
When I had a most thorough
examination made of the man
by a rectal specialist, he said
that the man had nothing
which needed operation.
As I write this, the people
of Chicago are being horrified
to find that a mentally dis
turbed man, without any med
ical knowledge, had for some
time been practicing medicine
in the city. As usually hap
pens in these cases, a number
of his ex-patients are now ral
lying to his defense.
Every so often one reads
in the papers that some man
who had picked up a little
medical knowledge while
working as an orderly in. an
army nopsital, suddenly blos
somed out as a surgeon, and
perforjned a lot of operations!
Evidently, certain hospital
authorities can be very care
less in accepting a man on
their staff. Often all a would
be surgeon has to do to make
money is to buy from the wid
ow of a doctor her husband's
diploma, and then to assume
the name on these certificates.
A Dermoid Cyst with Hair
And Teeth In It
A woman writes asking
why she - should have had a
"dermoid cyst" in her right
ovary, which contained skin,
hair and a few teeth. Such
cysts are found occassionally
in various parts, of the body,
and they probably represent
the growth of little bits of
skin that were left behind
when the two halves of the
body came together in front,
as the tiny infant was being
formed in its mother's womb.
-"Normally, such remnants
are cleared away and destroy
ed, but in a rare case they
stay, and slowly grow. Then,
either in childhood or later,
the tumor that results has to
be removed surgically.
