Panthers, Army
Play 14-14 Tie
Pittsburgh-OT r Fired-up
Pittsburgh spotted top-ranked
Army a two-touchdown lead
on a rain-soaked field Satur
day and then stormed back
on the passing of Quarterback
Ivan Toncic and Bill Kaliden
to knock the Cadets from the
perfect ranks with a 14-14 tie.
Kaliden.second-string signal
caller, passed to Halfback
Johnny Flara for a 43-yard
scoring play with 55 seconds
left in the first half.
A conversion attempt pass
from Kaliden End Ron Del
fine missed by inches to even
tually spell the difference be
tween a victory and a tie for
the Panthers.
It left the Cadets ahead 14-6
at halftime. Toncic took care
of the rest toy engineering a
58-yard scoring drive in eight
plays after "halftime.

Spokane, Wash. (CPU -Quarterback
Willie Wood un
corked a 77-yard pass play
in the waning seconds Satur
day to give Southern Califor
nia a thrilling 14-6 victory
over crippled Washington
State in a Pacific Coast con
ference football game.
Wood, injured most of the
season, stepped back from his
own 23 and fired a perfect
aerial to end Hillard Hill.
Hill, who had outraced the
defense, gathered it in on the
State 41 and ran the rest of
the way untouched to shat
ter the Cougars' Rose Bowl
dream.
Until then, it appeared the
game would end in a 6-6 stale
mate. Both scored in the first
half, but aside from the scor
ing drives, the teams had
battled mostly between the 30
yard lines.
Bob Newman Misted
Washington State was han
dicapped by the loss of Quar
terback Bob Newman, the
nation's leading passer and
All-America candidate, and
second string Quarterback
Dave Wilson.
Newman was hurt on the
second scrimmage play of the
game and Wilson was hurt in
the third period.
Their loss grounded Wash
ington State's potent air game
and the Cougar's ground
game could move only ip
spurts. Southern California,
meanwhile, was contained ex
cept for a second period
touchdown drive, a third pe
riod drive which ended when
a field goal failed, and the
game-winning explosion.
It marked S-C's 24th vic
tory in 32 games with Wash
ington State, which until to
day was a prime contender
to represent the dying confer
ence in the Rose Bowl.

MORZE SIDELINED
San Francisco (LTD Frank
Morze, 270-pound center for
the San Francisco Forty-Nin-ers,
has been sidelined, possi
bly for the remainder of the
season, it was disclosed today.
Morze suffered torn knee lig
aments in the game against
the Philadelphia Eagles last
Sunday and will be out of
play for at least "four or five
weeks."
Medford High school got a
sharp offensive moving in the
second quarter Friday night
and backed it with rock-ribbed
defense to turnout a 33
to 0 non-league football tri
umph over Eureka, Calif., at
Eureka.
The Black Tornado was
hampered by penalties in a
seemingly fast first quarter
but struck for two touch
downs in the second chukker,
one in the third and two more
in the fburth. Period standings
were 0 to 0, 13 to 0, and 19
to 0.
Running of Gerry Lyons
and Ron Reich and passing of
Dick Ragsdale highlighted the
Medford offensive but the
biggest scoring strike was by
Don Peek. He ran a punt back
75 yards to the goal.
A' four-yard smack by Ly
ons ended a shove from mid
field for Medf ord's first touch
down. Ken Durkee set up an
other goalward splurge with
a fumble recovery around the
Eureka 30-yard line. Medford
ground to the goal with
Ragsdale going the last yard.
Ragsdale to Dean
Ragsdale tossed to Lowell
Dean for 35 yards and a third
quarter marker. Peek's play
followed. Final Tornado coun
ter came with 15 seconds to
play. Lyons had run across
the TD stripe from the one
yard line but Medford was
penalized back to the 16.
From there Bob Pond threw
to Reich for the touchdown.
Mike Murray kicked two
extra points and Don Harri
son one.
Sharp charging by the
Medford offensive line was a
strong factor in the point-producing.
On defense credit had
to go to the entire Tornado
unit. Medford allowed the
Loggers a net of only 56
yards rushing. In passing Eur
eka managed just 54. Sturdy
pass defense permitted just
four completions in 11 at
tempts and Jim Clark made
one interception.
Gridders filling in for ail
ing players had a good night.
These included Don Mann
taking Gary Heath's spot in
the defensive line and Jerry
Anderson and Terry Earl who
took over for Fred and Al
Funston as linebackers. Heath
with an ankle sprain and
Fred Funston with the flu
did not participate in the
game and Al Funston suffer
ed an injury in the tussle.
Lyons had a good night
packing the ball and Reich
clicked well on the reverse
play.
Lynn Knight's punting
helped keep the Loggers sub
dued. He booted five times,
averaging 42.1 yards.
Medford was penalized nine
times for a total of 105 yards.
No penalties were stepped off
against Eureka.

Grebb, from Eagle Point, Ore.,

carries he has averaged 5.6
yards. Although scoring only
two touchdowns, he has had
the misfortune of having five
TDs called back. Three of
these have been for long
gainers, 31-46-77 yards.
Outstanding
Last season Jack was voted
the outstanding back on the
team and the outstanding
player in both the Sacramento

College laundry and Chloe
does secretarial work for the

Wisconsin Ties
With Ohio State
Columbus, Ohio-(DPD - Ohio
State and Wisconsin battled
to a 7-7 deadlock in a bitterly
fought Big Ten battle in rain
and mud Saturday before a
record Ohio stadium home
coming crowd of 84,142. Both
teams scored in the third per
iod. Wisconsin scored first when
on the third play of the second
half, Quarterback Dale Hack
bart returned a punt 64 yards
for a touchdown.
Ohio State came back to
drive 65 yards following the
kickoff with workhorse Full
back Bob White plunging over
from a foot out. A holding
penalty on Wisconsin on the
play before the touchdown
nullified a nice bit of ' de
fensive work by the Badgers
and moved the ball to the one
foot line.
The tie was the first black
spot on Ohio State's record
since its opening day loss to
Texas Christian here last year.
Since, Buckeye Coach Woody
Hayes' team had won 13 in
a row.

Stanford
Stuns UCLA
By 21-19
Los Angeles - (UPD The
quarterback partnership of
Sid Garber and Bob Nicolet
paid dividends for Stanford
Saturday as the Indians up
set favored UCLA, 21-19. be
cause of their ability to kick
one-point conversions.
With the two teams match
ing touchdowns, Stanford's re
liable Bill Face kicked all
three single-point conversions
as well as scoring a touch
down to give the Indians a
victory before 39,129 home
coming fans in Memorial Col
iseum. But it was the Stanford
passing game, with Nicolet
and Garber doing the throw
ing, that put UCLA in the
hole from the start and kept
them there as the Bruins were
unable to make their conver
sions. Score Called Back
The Bruins lost one touch
down when Chuck Kendall
passed to John Brown on
what appeared to be a 76
yard scoring play, but it was
called back because UCLA
had an ineligible receiver,
Guard Joe Harper, down
field. '
Kendall, taking over for
Don Long who last week used
up his five-game eligibility,
demonstrated brilliant run
ning talent but UCLA's pass
ing attack bogged down aside
from two touchdown throws
and Stanford was able to bot
tle up their running game
most of the time.
Stanford displayed a good
running attack, thanks to
Fullback Doug'Dick and roll
outs by Garber and Nicolet.
But its passing was the fac
tor that counted.
