There's money to be made in
Alaska these days but only
if you work.
None of that get-rich-quick
stuff in a couple of years. But
if a man will stick it out for
a decade, he has a good chance
to become moderately well
fixed.
Take the case of Frank
Presto, 40, who came here
from Omak, in eastern Wash
ington, in 1946.
A single man, Presto is half
Indian and -he still retains a
great love for the outdoors.
"I came up here so I could
be outside," he said. "And I J
wanted to be close to good
hunting and fishing. Besides,
my brother and I had inheri
ted a run-down ranch and we
needed some extra money to
put it ship-shape."
Presto has sent $50,000
home to his brother to invest
in the ranch during the past
11 years but he has worked
hard for every cent of it.
Work Limited
In the summer, he works
as a jack-hammer operator
for construction firms, mak
ing $3 an hour. His pay runs
from $40 to $75 and occasion
ally as much as $140 a day,
But due to the weather, there
are only three or four months
of construction work avail
able
In the winter, he tends bar.
The Alaska union scale for
bartenders is $30 a day. Most
of them work six days a
week. In addition, tips may
run from $5 to $15 a day.
Presto doesn't spend much
money on wine, women or
song. If he gets a few days or
a week off, he puts a pack on
his back and heads for the
great outdoors. Every year
he kills his moose and a cari
bou and gives the meat to his
many friends. He also hunts
grouse, ducks and geese. And
he does a lot of fishing. His
favorite fish is the grayling.
"If you ever eat a gray
ling," said Presto, "you'll
throw trout back into the
river."
Becomes Fir Fighter
In a dull period of the
work season, he sometimes
takes on a job as a fire fight
er in the forests. For this he
makes about $40 a day and
gets a good chance to com
mune with nature, besides.

I'm just about ready to take
it easy. I have a nice invest
ment in the ranch. And may
be I'll work only in the sum
mers from here on. I've found
a nice place to build a cabin
and a pal. is going with me
and we'll build it this
winter."
An amateur philosopher,
Frank doesn't worry too
much 'about the rest of the
world. He does buy Fairbanks
and Seattle newspapers
but mostly because he wants
to look at the sports pages.
"When I get out in the
country," he said, "I forget
about everything. This is the
last frontier and it may be
that I'm what you call 'going
native.' But it's a wonderful
life and I wouldn't trade it.
I haven't been stateside in
five years."

Bridge Plan Loses
Portland -(DPD- The Port
land Planning Commission
has declined to approve a pro
posal for a second Ross Is
land bridge across the Wil
lamette river here.
The Commission suggested
that a better investment of tax
money would be a contribu
tion toward approaches for a
proposed new M a r q u a m
bridge that would be part of
a federal-state freeway system
through the city.
The Commission declared
"with this freeway available,
additional capacity on the
Ross Island bridge probably
would not be needed until
after 1975."
