As I keep say
ing in this
column these
tiny pouches
yf3 are nearly al-

less. They come in our later
years, much like gray hair. I
doubt very much if they pro
duce any symptoms. I have
some of these .pouches, and
it would never occur to me
to , change my diet because
of them, or to worry about
them. What happens in older
peresons is that muscle fibers
in the large bowel spread a
bit and-through them a little
bit of the mucous lining of the
bowel , projects as a little
pouch, A diverticulum means
a little pouch. The condition
is called diverticulosis.
What is most unfortunate
is that hundreds of people
who have.the harmless divert
iculosis get the idea somehow
that they have diverticulitis.
This is an often serious, but
fortunately, rare condition in
which one of the little pouch
es has broken open and has
caused infection and inflam
mation around the bowel. Us
ually the person gets what
looks like an acute appendi-

at the Mt. Shasta Ski Bowl
lodge Saturday.',

invited to a press review this
week end. '
The Ski Bowl is expected to
open to the public some time
after Nov. 1.
A helicopter is being
placed at the disposal of visi
tors for special pictures, and
the group will ride the new
lift Saturday. A cocktail hour
and dinner are scheduled at
the lodge that night. Break
fast is planned there Sunday
morning. (
Speakers will include Rich
ard M. Oddie, San Francisco,
vice president and research
director for the Bank of
America; Willy Schaeffler of
Squaw Valley, technical advi
sor to the Olympics Water
committee; Ed Johnson of
Pasadena, president of the
Far West Ski association; and
Jim Hammond of the Califor
nia State Chamber of Com
merce in San Francisco.
The road to the lodge will
be closed to the public from
Saturday noon to Sunday
noon, officials said.

perhaps acute constipation.
Often the inflamed bowel has
to be operated on and remov
ed. Sometimes the inflamma
tion quiets down by itself.
Cancer Often Feared
Many doctors, when they
see diverticulosis, fear that
cancer may develop, but ex
tensive statistics show that,
if anything, the little pouches
protect a person from getting
cancer of the large bowel.
One of my relatives had per
haps 150 or 200 of the little
pouches on his bowel. He liv
ed into his 80s and never had
the slightest symptom from
them. He was an able physi
cian who never thought of
treating himself for them.
Usually, when I find a pa
tient with diverticula on his
colon, I hate to tell him about
them because if he is a worri
some type of person, even
my strong statement that he
must forget about them does
not help; and he will keep
going to other doctors, hop
ing to find one who will give
him much treatment for them
or perhaps even an operation.
The only reason why I feel
I must tell my peatient about
these things is that if he goes
to another doctor who finds
them and has a fit about them,
the patient will think I was
ignorant, or that I failed to
note the little pouches, or that
I was careless about them.
One of the biggest prob
lems a doctor has in medicine
is to decide whether or not to
tell a worrisome patient that
he has a perfectly harmless
heart murmur or signs of an
.old coronary injury to his
heart, which has never bother
ed him in the past, and will
never bother him in the fu
ture. If we tell the man about
the scar, he may get so. scared
he may become an invalid;
and if we don t tell him, and
some alarmist doctor later
finds it and has a fit over it,
he will lose confidence in the
whole medical profession. Of
ten, when faced with this di
lemma, I don't know what
is best to do.
Cures Discovered by Laymen
Every week good, kind peo
ple, write me about some
home medicine which they
say has cured them or some
friend, of some chronic or re
current disease like psoriasis.
They hope that I will be open
minded enough to be interest
ed, and interested enough to
get the medicine widely test
ed, and perhaps accepted by
the medical profession. I am
always open-minded and glad
to hear of any drug that seems
to have worked a miracle of
healing for someone, but I
cannot promise to be enthu
siastic, and I cannot promise
to tackle the tremendous and
costly job of trying to get the
medicine widely tested and
used. I cannot promise to try
to find out if the drug has
real value.
So often, especially when
a doctor is dealing with a
disease such a s psoriasis,
which tends to flare up and
later disappear for no known
reason, it may take a year -or
more of very honest study of
a hundred cases to tell if a
proposed new treatment has
any value. Actually, in recent
years, we physicians have
come to see that -in the cases

of many drugs we cannot
hope to tell if the stuff is
any good unless we use- what
is now called the "double
blind" method. Without this
method the patients and the
doctor are too likely to fool
themselves and to believe
what they would like to be
lieve. With the double blind meth
od a group of physicians will
take perhaps two thousand
university students, seen in
the Health Service offices,
with, let us say, a cold. Half
of them are given sugar pills,
and the other half are given
the medicine being tested.
When each student recovers,
he must turn in a card on
which he tells how good or
poor a result he thought he
obtained with the medicine.
The student does not know
what he got, and the doctors
who classify the reports sent
in (as either good or poor)
do not know what the partic
ular student got. Only when
the secret code number is
added, and the punch cards
are run through an I.B.M. ma
chine does anyone know
whether the medicine worked
any better than did the sugar
pills.
Curiously, of late, a num
ber of such studies have
shown that a third of the
persons getting the sugar pills
will report that "the medicine
was , wonderful!"
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag
nos by mail.
