American Pavilion at World's
Fair Gains Good-Will for U.S.
(Editor'! note: In the battle
for men's minds, the Brussels
World's Fair which ends to
day was a major propaganda
engagement between East
and West. How did the United
States fare before a jury of
millions of Europeans? Here
is an impartial appraisal by
the United Press International

Brussels - (UPD - The Ameri
can pavilion at the world's
fair gained an immense fund
of goodwill for America dur
ing its six-month existence,
even if it did not please every
one. Covering the daily happen
ings at the fair, I contacted
and interviewed hundreds of
visitors representing dozens
of nationalities and countries.
I found that most of the
criticism heard against the
$14,000,000 U. S. exhibit came

Few Europeans, Asians or
Russians were critical. For
them the huge round pavilion
designed by Edward Stone
and administered by Commis
sioner - General Howard S.
Cullman was an eye-opener.
I heard highly-placed per
sons ranging from Russia's
First Deputy Premier Anastas
Mikoyan to Princess Margaret
of Britian praise it as giving
them a better conception of
U. S. life than they had be
fore.
Had Educational Benefit
The feeling was certainly
shared by 90 per cent of the
estimated 15 milion visitors
who saw the U. S. show.
In an inter-pavillion contest
for agriculture and content,
the U. S. came fourth behind
Czechoslovakia, the Belgian
civil engineering and the
British pavilions. The Rus
sian judge, however, gave the
U. S. a full 20 points out of
20 in the contest.
A team of Russian camera
men who filmed every square
foot of the pavilion and its
exhibits said the film was to
be used by Moscow to plan
future exhibitions.
Commissioner - General
Cullman was asked dozens of
times by American visitors,
"Where is the evidence of our
industrial might?" .
He invariably pointed out
of his office window to the
main Brussels-Antwerp high
way and drew attention to the
streams of U. S. built autos
flashing past and said "out
there, gentlemen, out there."
Had Humanistic Theme
And the Russians did not
conceal that their own site
was prepared by American
built bulldozers and scrapers.
The lack of U. S. industrial
exhibits which surprised and
angered some Americans did
not surprise Europeans who
compriseed 90 per cent of the
visitors.
The Europeans knew the
Brussels fair was not the us
ual sort of trade fair at which
U. S. industrial exhibits in

This six-month "show of the
century" - was supposed to
be a compendium of man
kind's achievements in the
humanitarian fields.
"Towards more humanism"
was 'one of the themes laid
down by the Belgian organi
zers. Americans may ha've won
dered what a familiar thing
like a football uniform was
doing in the pavilion. But for
thousands of Europeans this
was the first sight of the mod
ern gladiator's getup and just
as interesting as the original
gladiator uniforms shown in
the Italian pavilion.
Art Provoked Comment
The controversy around the
art section started on the
opening day and was still rag
ing when the fair closed. "Too
much abstract," said some.
"Not enough" said others.
"Rubbish . . . wonderful . . .
incomprehensible ..." They
were all used.
There was no controversy
whatever around the huge
murals of "happy Russian
workers" all marching stead
fastly towards the exit of the
Soviet pavilion.
The Russian exhibit was
far from being a failure. It
received as many visitors as
the U. S. pavilion. Most tour
ists went to see both as they
were near each other and
also close to one of the main
fairground entrances.
But Europeans I talked to
found the Russian pavilion
stiff, old-fashioned and dom
inated by machine tools. The
Russians ignored the theme
of the fair and put over the
message "We're a big, power
ful and an industrial nation."
Most people interviewed
said they would have been
more interested in finding out
about the Russian people in
stead of viewing the collection
of linotypes, model dams and
steel presses.
The Russians' big trump,
notwithstanding, was the dis
play of the two sputniks, later
joined by the massive sput
nik III. The U. S. had not a
single exhibit to show it was
in the race.
The U. S. pavilion could
have been betteer. The Brit
ish are saying the same about-
their display. So are the Jap
anese, the French and the 44
other nations who participa
ted. No one was fully satis
fied. But the U. S. has cer
tainly spent $14,000,000 less
fruitfully in the past.

Try and Stop Me. Now I must admit that Lt John B.
Haney, USAF, has done just that with this horrendous tale:
"A fellow named Cerf, on
safari in deepest Africa,
captured a ferocious lion,
whom he tamed, and named
'Watson, or 'Wats' for short.
One day cannibals captured
poor old Cerf, bound him to
the back of the lion, and led
him down the jungle path.
Cerf quickly regained his
wits, however, and dropped
off this note for his com
panions to find: 'Help! I am
a prisoner on Wats, my
lion."
Not only teen-agers are avid
autograph fiends. It was a dear, fragile old lady who tottered tip
to comedian Jerry Lewis at a Las Vegas restaurant and simpered,
"Mr. Lewis, if you're not going to finish that dill pickle, may I havo
it for a souvenir?"

Complaint Seeks
$25,000 in Damages
A complaint asking $25,000
general damages and $552.40
special damages has been filed
in circuit court by Nadra
Greb, Ideal court, Medford,
against David L. Johnson and
William J. Johnson, 625 West
Jackson st., Medford.
According to the complaint,
David Johnson, son of Wil
liam Johnson, was operator of
a vehicle Dec. 5, 1956, on
Highway 99 which collided
with the rear of an automobile
operated by Nadra Greb. The
plaintiff charges that , David
Johnson operated his car in a
careless and negligent man
ner so that she suffered, se
rious and permanent injuries
as a result of the accident.
Minister Retires to
Become Evangelist
The Rev. C. Fred Lee, pas
tor of Faith Advent Christian
church, retires today after
serving as minister of the
church for the past .three
years. He will enter the field
of personal evangelism.
