NEWS CONFERENCE At his latest news conference in
Washington, President Eisenhower sharply criticized the
involvement of American foreign policy in the current
political campaign. The President also said the U. S. is
not going to try to coerce Chiang Kai-shek into reducing
his Chinese Nationalist forces on Quemoy and the other
off-shore islands.

Hornbrook Members of
the local Boy Scout troop dis
tributed the "Handbook for
Emergencies" last Saturday,
leaving one at every home
and place of business in the
community.
The booklet, put out by
the office of defense and civil
ian mobilization deals with
preparedness in the face of
such natural disaster as ac
cidents, fires, floods and
storms, and such man-made
disasters as enemy attack
. with nuclear weapons. It is
being distributed throughout
the country, by the Boy
Scouts of America as part of a
nation-wide "Safety Good
Turn" service program.
Anyone in the community
not having one of the infor
mative bookslets may obtain
one by contacting Scoutmaster
Harley Baker, or any member
of the Boy Scout troop.
Miss Mary Lee Rutledge,
who attends Chico State col
lege, spent the week end here
with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. W. A. Rutledge and her
brothers, John and David and
sister Ann.
;Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Jacobs
drove to Medford on Tuesday,
where Mrs. Jacobs boarded
the plane on the first lap of a
journey to Mexico. She is
on a writing assignment, and
expects to be located in a
town on the east coast of
Mexico for a month.
Mrs. Grace Quigley has
been hostess for both bridge
clubs during the past week.

club ' meeting - at her home
were Mrs. Bertha Bradley,

To observe her husband's
birthday Oct. 12, Mrs. Ivon
Howard entertained at a fam
ily dinner on Monday. Guests
were the Howard's son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs.
Loren Cummins and Loren
Howard and Jennifer, and
Cummins father, Rob Cummins.
Following Mass Sunday
morning, brunch guests of Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Bear and sons,
Leonard and Ermin, were the
Rev. Robert Connelly of
Yreka, and Mr. and Mrs
John Fitzgerald and four chil
dren. The Fitzgerald's, form
erly of Elm Grove, Calif., rec
ently purchased and moved
to the White ranch at Bogus
creek.
Mrs. Mable Lucas, 78, suf
fered a broken hip at her
ranch Saturday. She Was rid
ing across the ranch in a
pickup truck driven by her
son, and in crossing an irriga
tion ditch, the door flew open
and she fell out of the truck.
She is in the Siskiyou Gen
eral hospital in Yreka.
Miss Shirley Moffett spent
the week end in Montague as
a guest of at the home of a
school friend, Miss . Sally
Soule. ;
