Ewald Feels Decay in
Ginger Rogers Show

By WILLIAM EWALD
Uniled Press International
New York UPD There was
a feeling of decay and a smell
of must about Wednesday
r-fWF night's CBS-TV
some one

William Ewald conga, it would
not have surprised me at all
As a matter of fact, at one
point during the hour a broth
er named Ritz made a joke
about Eddie Cantor wanting
a boy, . and at another junc
ture, Miss Rogers did dance
the continental.
The strange thing about it
all, of course, is that Miss Rog
ers has been moved up to cul
ture goddess status in recent
years because she seems to
have discovered some secret
wellspring of youth. At the
age of 47, Miss Rogers has
more spring and bounce than
a new pogo stick and I'm sure
most matrons go into spasms
of jealous agony when her
manikin waist swivels "in
view.
Not Enough
However, youthful looks
and bounce are not quite
enough to carry off a show,
Witness Joan Crawford's dis
mal guest shot on the Bob
Hope show Tuesday night in
an empty sketch, the only pur
pose of which was to demon
strate that Miss Crawford,
now past 50, is holding up
well
Miss Rogers also is holding
up superlatively well, but un
fortunately, she is a perform
er of limited talent. Her sing
ing is abysmal and her danc
ing is pleasantly nimble, but
undistinguished without fire
or style or originality. It's no
secret that in the dancing de
partment, the genius of Fred
Astaire carried Miss Rogers
through all those wonderful
years of the 30's.
As for the rest of the show,
Ray Bolger contributed one
wonderfully archaic dance
number in bowling with six
ponies from the chorus and I
enjoyed it immensely. Un
happily, Bolger didn't dance
enough.
Three Brother
There were also three
brothers named Ritz on' the
show who may be comedy's
only living artifacts. I give
you this sample of one of their
jokes Ritz brother: "I'm
Wyatt (burping) Burp." Or
take this one:
Brother .A: "I bring you a
bowl of soup."
Brother B: "What kind of
soup?"
Brother A: "It's slop!"
As I ..said, you take it. I
don't want it. Or them.
The Channel Swim: The
Deal that called for an oil
firm (Texaco) to sponsor a

CBS-TV show centers around
the testimonial dinners of the
Friars Club. CBS-TV's Ed Sul
livan will film a show in In
dia early next year.
CBS-TV nighttime "Arthur
Godfrey Show" notched an al
most unbelievably low 5.6
Trendex Tuesday night op
posite it, ABC-TV's "Rifle
man" had a 23.1 and NBC
TV's Bob Hope a 29.2 in his
first half-hour. The long-time
lipstick sponsor of CBS-TV's
"The $64,000 Question" is un
happy with the show's rat
ings, but is committed for 26
weeks of the quiz.

on a proposed cruise to the
Baltic Sea aboard the actor's
boat.
"I won't go without them,"
Hayden said. . "It looks like I
may have- to cancel the trip
altogether." Hayden origin
ally planned to leave on Sept
15, but his ex-wife i suit pre
