Martha Raye To
Take Sixth Male

edienne, Martha Raye said on
Tuesday night she will soon
marry a former Westport,
Conn., policeman whose wife
divorced him Tuesday, blam
ing the actress for wrecking
the marriage.
Miss Raye, 42, said she and
Robert O'Shea, 31, "will be
married either here in Las
Vegas or when we get back
to New York." The star made
the statement when informed
that O'Shea's 21-year-old wife
Barbara Ann, had'been grant
ed in Bridgeport, Conn., an
uncontested divorce from
O'Shea.
Mrs. O'Shea ' testified that
before her husband resigned
from the police force of fash
ionable, suburban Westport in
1956 he had worked part
time for Miss Raye as a body
guard and that it had devel
oped into "more than a job."
The pretty Mrs. O'Shea, a
brunette mother of a 2-year-old
girl, sued Miss Raye for
$50,000 for alienation of af
fections after her husband
left her. The suit was settled
out of court for a reported
"substantial amount."
O'Shea will be Miss Raye's
sixth husband. "Husband No.
5, dancer Edward Begley, di
vorced the - comedienne in
1356 in Juarez, Mexico.

Obedience Training course
sponsored by the Ashland
YMCA, Bill Warren, secre
tary, has announced.
The nine-session course will
be held at the local Y between
7:30 and 8:30 p.m. each Tues
day. Wallace Kirsher, dog
trainer and handler, will be
instructor. Classes begin next
Tuesday.
The course will include
commands to heel, sit, stay,
lay down and come when
called. Retrieving and direc
tion of the dog by hand sig
nals also will be covered. Any
persons, junior high school
age and up, is eligible to sign
up for the course.

day. The ordinance, designed for
an emergency water shut-off
by the property owner for

Bill Howland was sworn in
as acting councilman to fill
the vacancy created by the
resignation of Wes Peters.
Howland is one of the peti
tioners for councilman in the

Pope Vote Seen

day that American cardinals
who vote for a new Catholic
pope will be voiding their U.
S. citizenship.
Glenn L. Archer, executive
director of Protestants and
Other Americans United for
Separation of Church and
State, raised the question in a
letter to Secretary of State
John Foster Dulles.
Archer said the U. S. immi
gration and naturalization law
provides that a citizen "shall
lose his nationality by . . .
voting in a political election
in a foreign state or partici
pating in an election or plebi
scite to determine the sover
eignty over foreign territory."
He said "it is commonly rec
ognized that the pope is a
head of a foreign state," and
U. S. citizens have no more
right to vote in a papal elec
tion than in any other foreign
election.
The letter urged Dulles to
notify the three American
Catholic cardinals Francis

violating U. S. law by taking

Strategic Air Command bomb
and navigation competition.
Lt. Col. Ernest I. Ticknow,
34, of Adair, Iowa, and his
pace-making crew have rack
ed up a total of 398.4 points
to capture a precarious lead
over 78 American and four
British crews competing in
the two phases of the meet.
Ticknow's crew was follow
ed by another B47 crew from
Little Rock, Ark., AFR, com
manded by Maj. Frank W.
Hawkey, with 395.8 points. In
third place with 395.8 points.
In third place was a British
Valiant crew commanded by
Wing Commander Sidney
Baker, 39, Bristol England,
with 388.8 points..
School News...
Griffin Creek School
Parents' night was held at
Griffin Creek school, October
1, in connection with the' regu
lar Mothers' club meeting.
Mrs. Harold Edmonds, presi
dent of the club, presided
over the meeting. The pro
gram was in charge of Mrs.
Floyd Eastwood.
Steve Whipple, musical di
rector, played two saxophone
solos, accompanied by Mrs.
Whipple. Mrs. Frink, princi
pal of the school, introduced
the faculty. Mrs. ' Sander,
chairman of room mothers, in
troduced the room mothers
and they welcomed the par
ents as they visited the class
rooms to meet the teachers
and hear a general overview
of the year's school work.
Refreshments were served
in the cafeteria by the eighth
grade mothers. A total of 185
parents attended. .
Griffin Creek school has
made a gain in enrollment
this year. An additional first
grade was- established in the
music room and Mrs. Ethel
Cummings is the new teacher.
Mrs. Mary Overstreet, fourth
grade teacher, is a new fac
ulty member this year.
New student body officers
are: Arthur Miller, president;
Clinton Partsafas, vice presi
dent; Ronnie Edmonds, treas
urer; Mary Kenyon, secretary;

Alcorn, in a public state
ment Tuesday night, said the
"appeasers" had "endangered
the diplomatic objectives of
the United States" and added:
"The Red Chinese ambassa
dor in Warsaw, in fact, has
been using Democratic politi
cal speeches on foreign policy
to delay settlement of this
problem which threatens the
peace of the world."
Dulles Makes Appeal
Alcorn's statement was Is
sued shortly after Secretary
of State John Foster Dulles
had appealed to both Demo
crats and Republicans to
"calm down" and stop inject
ing the Formosa issue into the
congressional campaign.
A State Department spokes
man had "no comment" when
asked if Alcorn's remarks
went counter to Dulles' no
politics apeal. He also said he
could not comment- on Al
corn's statement about the
Warsaw talks.
"We have a pledge with the
Chinese Communists not to
talk about the Warsaw dis
cussions," the spokesman said.
He added he did not know
where Alcorn had gotten his
information.
Asked where he had ob
tained the information about
the Warsaw talks, Alcorn said
at first it had "been reported
in the press" but then went on
to intimate he had received
it from the State Department.
He said he had "good reason
to believe it to. be accurate"
and acknowledged he con
ferred with Dulles last Sun
day. Mansfield Disturbed
