was about 220,000 miles from
the earth. To intercept the
moon, a rocket would have to
travel about 250,000 miles. ,

to "aim where it ain't to hit
where it is." If you ever shot

fense - Department and Air
Force admitted today they
committed what was probably
an historic blunder Saturday
when they announced that
the "Pioneer" moon rocket
had escaped the pull of the
earth's gravity.
About SO minutes after the
rocket was launched from
Cape Canaveral, Fla., and
when it was some 20,000 miles
above the earth's surface, a
previously prepared press re
lease Was issued proudly as
serting that the lunar . probe
rocket was "the first man,
made object to escape the
earth's gravitational field."
It was no such thing. And
officials acknowledged today
it was never intended to es
cape from gravity since it was
headed for the moon which
itself is within the earth's
gravitational influence.
The blooper was a sample
of difficulties encountered in
handling the sensational rock
et launching. Some reporters
and several officials consider
ed that information on the
whole lunar probe program
could have been handled bet
ter and faster. j
Hold Back Information
For example,' many rocket
authorities suspected and
probably knew 24 hours be
fore , it was announced that
the Pioneer would not go far
ther than about 80,000 miles
and that its speed was a few
hundred miles an hour less
than intended. But the world
was deprived of thatanforma
tion until a 1 p.m. (p.s.t.) Sun
day news conference at the
National Academy of Sciences
here.
The rocket was launched at
12:42 a.m. (p.s.t.) Saturday.
After midnight that day very
little information on its po
sition or scientific findings
was released prior to the Sun
day news conference ' for
which the data apparently
was being held back.
Asked by United Press In
ternational for an explanation
of the blunder about escaping
gravity, the" Pentagon said to
day its press release of Satur
day "wfls technically inaccu
rate in that it was never in
tended that Pioneer should es
cape the earth's gravitational
field completely."
Admits Mistake
Maj. Gen. Donald N. Yates,
commander of the Atlantic
missile range at Cape Cana
veral, said Monday the mis
take simply "slipped by all
of us."
"One thing is clear,'' said
Yates who is rapidly becom
ing one of the military serv
ices' better experts in public
relations: "Before the next
moon probe, those of us
charged with reporting our
own" Operation ' to the press
and Other news media must
familiarize ourselves with the
new terminology of space
flight. .
"I sincerely hope this slip
will be excused and, as such,
that it will not dull our hon
est appreciation of the tremen
dous achievements of the Pio
neer's flight," he said.
Yates, whose statement was
issued through the Pentagon,
sought to take on a share of
the blame. He said the of
fending press release had
been "thoroughly coordinat
ed" throughout rocket and
space circles.
Information Controlled
The fact was, however, that
information on the lunar
probe was rather rigidly con
trolled from" Washington. The
mistake about escaping gravi
tational pull could be taken
as an outgrowth of a state
ment made last Aug. 5 by Roy
W. Johnson, director of the
Pentagon's advanced research
projects agency. ,
Johnson said an "objective
of the Air Force lunar probe
would be "to reach the escape
velocity from earth's gravita
tional field." He referred to
the "flight of the test vehicle
out Of the earth's gravitational
field and into space to a dis
tance of perhaps 250,000 miles
from the earth."; ..:

Portland-(UPD-The Air Force
said today that an explosion
felt in parts of Portland Mon
day afternoon apparently was
caused by a jet from the Port
land Air Base.
The Air Force said an inves
tigation indicated the blast
may have come from an F-102
Delta Dagger jet attached to
the 337 Fighter Group. The
aircraft was on a routine train
ing flight, an official said. The
blast was heard and felt at
11:15 a.m.
A sonic boom is caused by
pressure an airplane forms
when it travels ffister than
sound. Police, the sheriff's
office and the fire department
received calls from widely
scattered parts of Portland. No
damage was reported.
The Air Force said the jet
was flying at 40,000 feet south
of the city at the time of the
blast.

Portland-OJPD-James Reston,
Pulitzer prize - winning col
umnist for the New York
Times, told a Portland State
College audience here Monday
night that he finds little public
interest around the nation in
the- great issues facing the
country at election time. He
said his travels away from
Washington had convinced
him that "there is considerable
apathy except in areas where
there is heavy unemploy
ment." In those areas, he
said, voters were more inter
ested in the domestic job sit
uation than in foreign policy.
Reston said he doubted that
President Eisenhower, in a
campaign swing, would be
able to reverse what appeared
to be a strong Democratic
trend.

Polio Outbreak
Possibility Told
The current polio epidemic
in Detroit, Mich., is a vivid
reminder that paralytic polio
will remain a threat to every
community in the nation as
long as millions of Americans
neglect vaccination, Jerry
Gastineau, chairman of the
Jackson county chapter of the
National Foundation, declared
today.
"What is happening in De
troit could happen here," Gas
tineau said. "There are far too
many unvaccinated individ
uals in our county and many
others who have had only one
or two shots. While expanding
our program to take in arthri
tis and birth defects, we must
not lose sight of the third face
of crippling-polio. It is still
with us."
By the end of September
more than 650 persons had
been stricken with polio in
Wayne county (Detroit), half
of them paralytic and more
cases were being reported
each day, the chapter chair
man revealed.
"We have been fortunate in
our county this year in that
the polio rate has been light,"
Gastineau said. "However,
with many of our children
and young adults unvacci
nated, we are probably as sus
ceptible to an outbreak as
Detroit."
The Wayne county chapter
of the National Foundation is
now spending almost $50,000
per week on car of the vic
tims of the epidemic, and the
chapter estimates that it will
need more than $1,000,000 for
aid to patients by the end of
the year.
