3rd of Company Income Taxes
Said Passed on in Higher Costs
It1-, V

By ELMER C. WALZER
UPI Financial Editor
New York-flJPD-Taxes cost
Americans a lot of money,
and everyone knows that.
What isn't
known or rec
ognized is how
much of a
bite the taxes
take. The cur
rent issue of
Look maga
zine contains
a table which
shows how
Elmer wiizer much of one's
tax dollar is involved in the
various government outlays.
And, in addition, the table
shows the share of federal
taxes on corporations added
to the regular tax burden of
the various classifications.
In other words, the taxes
are added to the selling prices
so that the consumer pays
them indirectly to a greater
extent than he pays the indi
vidual income taxes in many
instances, particularly the
higher brackets.
. "We pay many taxes with
out realizing it," says the ar
ticle, "and we're unrealistic
about much taxation.
People Pay Them All
"We speak of transportation
taxes, for example, as if buses,
railroads and airlines had any
money except what they get
from customers.
"We slough off corporation
taxes as if corporations mint
ed money.
"Actually, it's people who
pay it all in the end."
The article notes that per
sonal income taxes plus ex
cise and state taxes add up to
about two-thirds of the gov
ernment's income. The rest
comes from corporations.
"One-third of these com
pany income taxes, by econo
mists' estimates, is passed on
in higher prices," says Look.
"Every time you buy any
thing, you pay a share of the
tax on the corporation that
sells to you. The remainder
is assessed against the com
panies' owners, the stockhold
ers. They don't iget all their
profits; the government takes
a big share."
The article breaks down the
big uses of taxes. . Defense
takes , the most-$40 billion
$230 for every person -in the
country. That. works out at
about 56 cents of each tax
dollar.
Big Interest Payments
The national debt takes 11
cents of every tax dollar;
agriculture, and veterans
about seven cents each, and
foreign aid, a little less than
five cents.
The chart shows that a per
son with a net income of
$5,000 a year pays $491 in
federal income tax and $147
in other federal taxes.
Deducting these taxes there
is left $4,362- This taxpayer
also bears a share of $105 of
federal taxes on corporations
paid in higher prices, and $68
as a share of federal taxes on
corporations before receipt of
income.
This $5,000 earner pays di
rectly and indirectly $811 in
taxes. The $8,000 earner pays
directly or indirectly $1,620;
the $12,000 earner pays $3,
522; the $20,000 earner pays
$8,420, and the $50,000 earner
pays $38,053.
If you earn $5000 a year,
your share of the national
debt works out at $3,020, ac
cording to the chart. If you
earn $12,000, your share is
$13,115 and if you earn $100,
000 a year your share is $367,
064. Among the things the
$5,000 earner pays for in
taxes are $85.56 interest on
the national debt; $38.50 to
support farm prices; $42.23
for veterans' benefits and pen
sions; 47 cents for subsidizing
the airlines; and $1.28 to
build public housing.
One could conclude from
the Look article that while
government spending mafces
the taxes high, the taxes them
selves do the job of inflating
the cost of living.
