Back in 1914, William Famum and Tom
Santchi battled through one full
reel in what is still considered the
classic movie fight of all time. Ever
since, fist fights have been an integral
part of motion pictures, with actors
constantly trying to surpass their
predecessors in reality and brutality.
Latest entry in this category is the
fight between Don Murray and Richard
Egan in 20th-century Fox's "These
Thousand Hills" which producer David
Weisbart claims will go down in Holly
wood history as the roughest fight ever!
The rumpus starts in Miss Fran's
palace of pleasure after Dick has been
knocking Lee Remick around, and Don
does not approve. He refuses to drink
with Dick and, instead, tosses a glass of
whiskey in his face. In what miv ho
described as a well-coordinated movement, Egan rises, sweeps the card
table aside, and plants a haymaker on Murray's jaw.
They crash against a table and to the floor. Next they rise against the bar- it
is Murray's turn to swat Egan. They leave the bar in a shambles and fight up
the stairs and through the bannisters, much to Miss Fran's consternation
As Dick is about to deliver a coup de grace with his boot, our hero once
more charges the villainous Egan. This time they knock out the portals of
the palace and shatter the guardrail to the street.
Outside it has been raining and the combat becomes really dirty. The muddy
mayhem waxes murderous when Egan seizes a carbine from a saddle sheath
and aims it at Murray. Before he can fire, a shot is heard and Egan goes
down. Lee Remick's black eye did not interfere with her deadly aim'
The fight lasts four minutes on the screen and took two days to film. It cost
$60,000 and numerous bottles of ketchup.

Egan rises to wrath with roundhouse right to Don's jaw. Locked in mortal combat, as they say, pair pulverizes furniture.
