HAVE WE GOT ONE, TOO? This is the plaster cast of
a giant footprint found in a remote wilderness area of
Northern California by a road construction crew cutting
a new access road for a logging company. Numerous
tracks like this have been seen in the last six weeks, in
the fresh dirt of the road. The prints are 16 inches long,
6 inches wide and about 2 inches deep, with ,a stride of
about 50 inches long. The logging crew suspects the pres
ence of an "Abominable Woodsman."

Shutdown Starts
Columbus, Ohio - (UPD - An
"orderly shutdown" was un
derway today in the glass in
dustry in aavance of Friday ;
scheduled strike by 25.000
members of the United Glass
and Ceramics Workers.
R. J. Reiser, president of
the union, said the shutdown
was begun ahead of the Fri
day deadline so plant pro
cesses could be stopped with
out damaging equipment.
Reiser said the action was
taken after Libbey-Owens-
Ford and Pittsburgh Plate
Glass failed to agree to fur
ther negotiations on a new
contract.
He 'said the strike covered
all of the union's workers in
eight states, many of whom
stayed on the job since Sept
25 when the old contract ex
pired.
Negotiations broke down
one week ago in a deadlock
mainly on the contract issues
of manpower and overtime,
About 2,000 workers began
the walkout Tuesday. In Ohio,
about 5,400 L-O-F workers
were idled at Toledo and 600
Pittsburgh Plate Glass work
ers at Mt. Vernon.
Negotiations were under
way at Miami, Fla., between
the two firms and the union
for 17 days before reaching
a deadlock.
"Unauthorized s t r i k e s'
broke out before the walk
outs Tuesday at Ford City and
Creighton in Pennsylvania,
and in St. Louis, Mo.
Plants of the two firms are
in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Mary
land, West Virginia, Illinois,
Missouri, Oklahoma and
Louisiana.

Portland Seeks to
Get Vanport Area
Portland-ttJPD-Formal nego
tiations with the U.S. General
Services administration for
the city of Portland to acquire
part of the 365 acres of West
Vanport have been requested
by Mayor Terry D. Schrunk
Schrunk said 146 acres at
the north end of the surplus
property was "extremely val
uable" for industrial pur
poses. He said it was his un
derstanding the city could
buy the tract for $101,000
The city has designated the
central 318 acres of West Van
port for recreational purposes
and the mayor said it could
be acquired for half of its
$175,000 evaluation under a
GSA priority program. If 171
acres in the southwest portion
would be used as a sanitary
fill the city could get the acre
age for nothing, he said.
Mayor Schrunk said GSA
told him the city has the first
call for the property but if
the land is negotiated for, it
would be put up for bid by
private developers.
Machinery Strike
Ends at Portland
Portland - (UPD - A four-day
strike at Zidell Machinery
and Supply Co. was settled
here Tuesday but not before
picketing metal workers were
picketed by another union.
Lew Traub of Lewis Can
vas Products Co. picketed the
strikers in front of the Zidell
plant because he said their
picket banners were made by
a non-union shop.
A new contract with the
Zidell workers was signed in
the afternoon, giving them an
11-cent hourly wage increase
and other fringe benefits.
They were represented by the
Portland Metal Trades council.
rendition of "Comes Love" by
Marilyn Maxwell. The first
was almost torturously un
funny; the second stronger on
enthusiasm than on singing
skill.
Chunk of Fluff
But these were balanced by
a fresh and offbeat chunk of
fluff that featured Earl Hall
in a song about cows and an
other bit that involved a spoof
of the "Whiffenpoof Song"
as it might be done by a Fred
Waring group. The Whiffen
poof choral team was made
up of such whimsies as Her
mione Gingold and Marion
Larne and struck me as a
pretty delightful chunk of but
terscotch. Now that I've seen both of
Moore's nighttime offerings, I
would say that its most satis
fying trait is its lack of pre
dictability. It has an air of no
formula about it that seems to
promise delivery of things
other than just songs, dances
and jokes. As a result, even
when some of its bits fizzle,
there's still a feeling of ex
pectancy about things to
come.

unveiled its new, small, econ

The 1959 Lark, shorter than
the competitor of American
Motor's Rebel Six Rambler,
was previewed by newsmen
here Tuesday.
Company President Harold
E. Churchill said the Lark
was designed to put Stude-
baker-Packard in the black
for the first time since the
merger which created the
firm in 1954. He refused to
predict when profits would
begin mounting.
Dealers have already or
dered Larks totalling more
than half of the company's
production of 49,000 units of
all models during the 1958
model year, Churchill said."
"The new Lark is out to
capture an important share
of the fastest-growing seg
ment of the American auto
mobile market," Churchill
said.
"The demand is there and I
believe we are going to get a
share. The overnight success
of our Scotsman last year con
firmed our belief in the
soundness of the economy car
market."
Churchill said with present
plant facilities Studebaker
Packard could produce 280,-
000 Larks, but he would not
predict how many would be I
sold.
Jury Investigation
Of Violence Planned
Eugene -(UPD- Lane County
District Attorney Eugene C.
Venn said Tuesday he plans
to ask the-Lane county grand
jury to launch a full-scale in
vestigation into alleged "law
lessness" in the Oakridge
area, where the International
Woodworkers' of America
union has been on strike
against the Hines Lumber Co.
since June 3.
Venn said 20 subpoenas
have been issued and are be
ing served.
Although he did not con
nect the "lawlessness" direct
ly with the "Hines Lumber
strike, he said the acts of vio
lence are "apparently directly
associated with a pending la
bor dispute."
Venn said there was a de
railment last summer of a
yard freight train, that a state
police car and logging vehi
cles had been "sabotaged,"
and that there had been re
ports of violence threats.
He blamed a "small hand-
full of men" for the violence
and said the investigations
were hampered by individ
uals afraid to talk.
