Milwaukee - (UPD - Gangling
Gil McDougald, who usually
comes through when the Yan
kees need him most, was back
on production schedule today
to help give the club needed
life in the World Series.
It was the angular Scots
man who, during the past
eight years, has made it pos
sible for Casey Stengel to be
a platooning genius. It was
he, too, who sparked the club
early the pasf season as it
piled up a walkaway lead in
the American lague pennant
race.
And it was McDougald,
playing despite a painful groin
rash, who showed the Yan
kees Monday how to get rid
of their long-time nemesis,
Lew Burdette.
McDougald Homers
Burdette had stood them on
their ears four times running,
three times as the Yankees
lost the 1957 series to these
same Braves and once again
in the second game of the
classic this time around. And
for the first two innings Mon
day he had them eating out of
his hand again.
Until McDougald stepped
up to the plate to lead off the
third inning.
Then the 30-year-old father
of four whipped his bat into
one of Burdette's fast ones
and the ball arched high
through the sunlight and
struck the screen of the left
field foul pole for a home run
and a 1-0 Yankee lead.
It was all that pitcher Bob
Turley was going to need, as
it finally turned out, even
though the Yankees ran up
six more in the sixth with a
McDougald double sending
home two more runs.
"I knew I hit it solidly,"
the freckle-faced infielder said
later. "The only question in
my mind was whether it was
going to curve foul'"
Ends Balling Slump
Thus did McDougald, the
"glue man" of the Yankee in
field, come out of a harrow
ing slump which he had la
bored through the last two
months of the season.
"I was going great guns
early in the year," he recalled.
"I was hitting about .375 and
then the bottom fell out."
It did.. He wound up bat
ting a feeble .250 for his worst
season m Yankee flannels.
But afield he still was the
take charge guy, able to
switch from third to short to
second. Many think he is
the best player defensively at
every one of these positions
in the entire league.

ailments during the long voy
age, but no major illnesses.
No great psychological
problems arose from the
men's isolation, either, Eber
sold said, and so far as he
could tell, the only tensions
felt by ' any of the men had
to do with worry over the
welfare of their families.
The Seawolf pulled into its
home base here late Monday.
It left here Aug. 7 on a cruise
that took it more than 15,700
nautical miles submerged.
Rear Adm. Hyman C. Rick-
over, known as "the father of
the atomic submarine," said
in welcoming ceremonies as
the Seawolf docked that the
sub's historic cruise, along
with the voyages under the
North Pole icecap of the Nau
tilus and Skate, had "open
ed a whole area of the world
to exploration."
Open To Aggressors
Rickover added that "sober
reflection should be given to
the fact that this area is open
to potential aggressors also."
The Seawolfs skipper,
Richard B. Laning, was pro
moted from commander to
captain at just about the time
the sub surfaced Monday off
Block Island, R.I., at 7:45 a.m.
(PST).
He said at a press confer
ence in New London Monday
night that the Seawolf ac
tually could have stayed un
dersea up to twice as long
as the record it set.
A chief purpose of the mar
athon cruise was to show that
man can stand up under the
mental and physical strain of
isolation similar to that which
would occur in a flight into
outer space.
