Balloon Space Flight Delayed
Alamagordo, N. M. - (M) -The
Air Force today post
poned its scheduled manned
balloon flight to the edge of
space until dawn Tuesday be
cause of adverse weather con
ditions. The balloon, when it is
launched, is expected to reach
an altitude of 100,000 feet
The delay was the latest in
a series of postponements for
the Holloman Air Force Aero
Medical Laboratory near Ala
magordo, and for It. Clifton
M- McClure, 26, of Ander
son, S. C, who has volun
teered to ride the instrument

have suspected that changes
can take place in the body
chemistry
which predis
pose to the
coming of a
heart attack
or a stroke.
Recently, Drs

man and Ray
H. Roseman,
and Miss Car-
Dr Alvarw roU of San
Francisco, reporting in "Cir
culation," told of a study of
40 accountants, 18 of whom
were chiefly concerned with
getting out yearly tax returns.
What Is The Law?
This column is prepared as a public service by the
College of Law, Willamette University, Salem, to
explain basic legal principles, not to provide legal
advice. The reader is cautioned not to apply .these cases

Was The Lady Falsely
Imprisoned?
A lady went to a depart
ment store to buy a cap for
one of her grandchildren. She
made the purchase from a
clerk,, put the cap on the
child's head and while wait
ing for her change, put the
old cap in her purse. The
store manager approached the
lady and demanded that she
remove the article she had put
in her purse.
She explained to him what
she had done. The manager
indicated he did not believe
the story and said, "You can
not leave the store, that is
orders." He then grabbed the
lady's purse as she was be
ginning to walk away. He
opened the purse and discov
ered that she was telling the
truth. She later sought dam
ages in a legal action against
the store on the basis that the
short period she was detained,
when her purse was grabbed,
amounted to "false imprison
ment." Awarded Damages
The court felt she was con
fined ,or detained within
boundaries fixed by the man
ager and that this was done
without legal justification.
She was awarded $100 in
damages. This recent Ken
tucky case illustrates clearly
that the confinment does not
have to be in' a building or
anything with walls and lock
ed doors, nor for any extend
ed period of time.
It is not necessary that
force be used against the per
son imprisoned. For example,
a person suspected of shop
lifting and ordered to go to
the office to be searched or
questioned may go without
resisting and still seek dam
ages for having been falsely
imprisoned.
One court held a person
was falsely imprisoned when
his clothes were stolen while
he was swimming in a lake.
The court reasoned that he
was confined to the lake until
he could get some clothes.

Another court decided that
a railroad company had false
ly imprisoned a man who was

Naturally, for these men, the
period from April 1 to April
15 is always one of great
stress. The other 22 account
ants work for firms through
out the year, and are under
greatest stress from January
to the April tax-line.
Among these persons, fre
quent measurements of the
serum cholesterol and the
clotting time of the blood
showed that during the peri
ods of strain, the serum cho
lesterol reading went up a bit.
During the periods of least
tension, it averaged 210 milli
grams, while during the pe
riods of great tension, it av
eraged 252 milligrams. Impor
tant, also, was the discovery
that normally the clotting
injured in a train wreck when
a railroad employee told the
injured man. he could not
leave until he had given in
formation about the wreck.
The injured man was on his
back and could no move, but
was kept about 15 minutes
before he was placed in the
awaiting ambulance.
The law on "false imprison
ment" is pretty much the
same in all states. The only
real differences arise in the
determination of facts, such
as was there really a "con
finment" or was this confine
ment legally unjustifiable.
Dalles Bypass
Plan Rejected
The Dalles - (UPD - Officials
of The Dalles have rejected
a State Highway Department
plan for bypassing this Co
lumbia river city as part of a
four-lane route for Highway
30.
At a hearing conducted by
Highway Commissioner Ken
neth Fridley, city and Wasco
county officials said the plan
approved by the state does
not provide access to The
Dalles water front area. They
said this is to be developed
into a "world wide" port for
movement of grain out of the
area and of metal for the
Harvey aluminum plant into
the city.
The city asked, that the by
pass be located closer to the
Columbia river and that
Union Pacific railroad tracks
now located on First street be
moved.
Rejection of the state plan
come about primarily as a re
sult of an engineering study
by the Port of The Dalles in
planning for future ship move
ments. '

tations by Mira Pavlovick,
who has transplanted a head
from one chick to another!
These chicks with a new head
