Science Teacher
To Be Speaker
For Mineral Club
Monte Kounz, junior high
school science teacher, will
show slides of minerals and
gems at a meeting Friday, Oc
tober 10, of Roxy Ann Gem
and Mineral club at the Girls
Community club. Both the
meeting time and place are
new on the club's schedule.
Opal is the birthstone for
the month and an article on
the gem will be read by Mrs.
Treavell Turpin at the meet
ing. At the September meeting
Arthur Dysart, Ashland,
spoke on undersea mineral
and an article about sapphire,
birthstone for the month, was
read by John Bowdish.

Know." He is author of sev

Annual Campaign Opened
By Parent-Teacher Units
To focus attention on the
annual membership drive of
the county's various parent
teacher association units, the
Jackson County Council of
Parent - Teacher associations
has issued the following state
ment. "Parent-teacher associations
across America are carolling
members to help with solv
ing the problems of education
in our world today. In the
past 10 years, PTA member
ship has increased 114 per
cent. Mrs. James C. Parker,
Grand Rapids, . Mich., presi
dent of the National Congress
of Parents and Teachers, has
said, "This growth has come
about, and will inevitably con
tinue, because we are a volun
tary organization, striving to
ward goals that mean much
to every American-the best
possible homes, schools, com
munities in the best possible
world."
"The monumental task of
people concerned with educa
tion can be summarized brief
ly by an excerpt or two from
the .Rockefeller report on
education, 'The Pursuit of Ex
cellence: Education and the
Future of America.' The 48
page report states, 'Between
1870 and 1955, while our
population was increasing 80
times.' Under the heading
'does this mean you?' the re
port continues: 'We may have,
to a startling degree, lost the
gift for demanding high per
formance of ourselves. It is
a failure of home, church,
school, government-a failure
of all of us.'

Teacher magazine.
"Parent - teacher members
are spokesmen for the homes
of America in this matter of
