Hank Bauer, a link with the
days when the New York
Yankees were a legend of
power, crashed the embattled
Bronx Bombers back into the
World Series, two games to
one, Saturday when he drove
in all the runs in a 4-0 victory
over the Milwaukee Braves.
The battling ex-Marine, a
Kankee standby for more
than a decade, lashed out a
bases-loaded single for two
runs in the fifth and then
brought those twice-beaten
Yankees completely off the
floor with a two-run homer
in the seventh.
Those were the runs which
carried big Don Larsen-loser
in last year's finale-back to
the winning heights again as
he fire-balled and fielded the
Yankees through seven sus
pensef ul innings. L a r s e n
didn't match his history-making
no-hitter of 1956 because
the recuperating arm which
hadn't pitched a full game in
three months tired and flame
throwing Ryne Duren had -to
come on in tlie eighth to close

But Bauer's record-break
ing bat-smashing out three of
the four Yankee hits and run
ning his consecutive World
Series hitting streak to 17
straight games spelled the
difference as the Yankee hung
the defeat on veteran Bob
Rush before a roaring crowd
of 71,599 this warm, hazy
day.
Gave It All He Had
Larsen gave it all he had
and it was plenty while it
lasted.
His bulleting fast ball and
baffling breaking pitches set
eight of those Braves down on
strikes and stranded another
10 straining baserunners. And
it was Larsen's sterling de
fensive play in the sixth
which choked off the most
dangerous Milwaukee threat
Then, when his six - hit
pitching and Bauer's bat had
parlayed the Yankees just two
innings from home, Duren
came on with the fastest and
wildest pitch in baseball to
turn back those Braves with
out a hit.
The Yanks threatened again
in the sixth, getting two on
with two out. However, Rush
set them down before leaving
the ball game for a pinch-hit
ter in the seventh. Del Cran-
dall set up his exit by greeting
Larsen with a single, Johnny
Logan flied out, Rush's pinch
hitter, Harry Hanebrink pop
ped out, and after Bruten
walked, Schoendienst flied to
Mantle.
New York was looking for
a cushion about - this time,
with Larsen having "had it,"
and Bauer took care of the
demand almost immediately.
With one out, old Enos (Coun
try) Slaughter batted for Lar
sen and managed to get him
self hit by a pitched ball off
the slants of Don McMahon.
That's when Bauer stepped
in and knocked one into the
left field stands for his third
homer of this series and his
sixth in djassic play.
Today, when they come
back to "the house that Ruth
built, for the fourth game,
both teams will go back to
their "big "men." For the
Braves it will be Lefty Spahn,
who won the opener at Mil
waukee. The Yankees will
shoot with Whitey Ford, the
"little iceman" who started
the opener which was lost in
relief by Duren.
"We woke up today,"
Stengel said in the clubhouse
after it was all over.
But he still couldn't be too

the closest finishes in Belmont
Park's long history, Outer
Space, a bay filly owned by
Mrs. G. S. Smith, beat off
three challengers in the
stretch Saturday to win the
$70,300 Beldame Handicap by
a nose.
Calumet Farm's A-Glitter,
who led the field by a head
entering the stretch, . finished
second, a head before the
King Ranch's Dotted Line,
who in turn was only a neck
ahead of Rare Treat at the
end of the mile and one-eighth
run.
Outer Space, who had a
running mate in Alanesian,
ws timed in 1:49 25 and the
entry returned $21.90, $9.90
and $7.20. A Glitter, one-half
of the Calumet entry, along
with Rosewood, paid $13.80
and $8.80, while Dotted Line
returned $7.00.

Oregon State, a disappoint
ment in its first two games,
got its other touchdown in the
first half on an 84-yard drive
sparked by halfback Paul
Lowe, an old UCLA nemesis.
Hake also played a fine
game on defense as the Ore
gon State line outplayed the
UCLA forward wall. Tackle
Ted Bates and guard Jim
Brackins were other Oregon
standouts in the line.
Oregon State had an alert
pass defense, intercepting four
UCLA aerials in all. Leon
Criner, who alternated with
Lowe at the tailback spot for

UCLA Threatens
UCLA made its most serious
scoring threat late in the
final period when it drove 76
yards to the Oregon State five
where it was stoDDed. Jim
Steffen hit Jim Johnson on a
pass just out of the end zone
during the late stages of this
drive. .
UCLA drove 67 yards in
the first half to the Oregon
State 16 but wound up a yard
short of a first down on a
fourth' down pass play.
Lowe, who two. years ago
led Oregon State to a 21-7 win
over UCLA here, finally
showed the stuff expected of
him Saturday. During , the
first half 84-yard drive he car
ried the ball for 41 yards and
passed to Jerry Doman for
another 16. Lowe scored the
touchdown from nine yards
out.
Prothro, since coming to
Oregon State from UCLA in
1955, has gone through 16
home games here and at Port
land without defeat. Satur
day's win was a special prize
for the Beavers as it was their
final scheduled game- with
UCLA due to the impending
1959 breakup of the PCCf.
Oregon State now has a 1-1
mark in. PCC play, it was
UCLA's first conference game.
Hake was placed in a start
ing role after the death two
weeks ago from leukemia of
Buzz Randall; Oregon State
All-Coast center of last season.
