E. Stevenson accused the ad
ministration Thursday night
of "joining the saboteurs" as
a result of a "sudden change"
in its policy on China.
Stevenson expressed this
opinion in a speech to a Demo
cratic rally at Oakland Audi
torium. Attack on Nixon
His speech Contained a
sharp attack on Vice Presi
dent Richard M. Nixon, who
was addressing a $100-a-plate
GOP dinner at the same time
in the same building. Only a
firewall separated the two
gatherings.
He criticized Nixon's state
ment earlier this week that a
State Department official was
trying to ''sabotage" the ad
ministration's China policy by
disclosing that four out of five
letters to the department were
critical of the administration's
position on Quemoy.
"And now with President
Eisenhower and Secretary
Dulles suddenly changing
their position, it looks as
though the administration has
joined the saboteurs," Steven
son said.
"But I have an idea that
our nimble vice president
won't have much trouble
catching up with Dulles. But
will Dulles still be there when
the vice president catches up?
He is very agile too.
Hard To Keep Up
"I must sympathize with
the vice president. It is hard
to keep up with this country's
foreign policy because of the
four-hour time difference be
tween California and Wash
ington." j
Although Nixon made no
mention of Stevenson at the
GOP rally next door, another
Republican did allude to him.
Gov. Goodwin J. Knight,
candidate for U.S. Senator,
mentioned that California has
been invaded by "carpetbag

The Democratic chairman
said Nixon had described "any
one who presents facts about
the lags in our defense as
guilty of 'rotgut thinking',"
while Benson "sought to per
suade his audience that vot
ers must choose between Re
publicans and 'the do-gooders,
the self-servers and the sub
versives'," and that the Presi
dent "put the Republican cam
paign arguments in terms of
'staying out of the gutters'."
Improvement Seen
Simpson said he .thought
there had been a "definite im
provement" in the Republican
fall election outlook in the last
week or 10 days.
He declined to attribute this
to the resignation of White
House aide Sherman Adams,
contending instead it reflected
better economic conditions, increased-
political activity by
President Eisenhower, and a
growing awareness that re
jection of the GOP means "a
return to Trumanism."

Martha Taft,
Widow of Former
Senator, Dies
Cincinnati, Ohio (UPD Mrs.
Martha Bowers Taft, 68,
warmhearted widow of Sen,
Robert A. Taft who helped
"Mr. Republican" over his
campaign trails, died here
Thursday after eight years of
illness. '
Her death at her suburban
Indian Hill home came sud
denly, although she had been
confined to a wheel chair
after suffering a stroke in
1950.
Mrs. Taft was best known
for her campaigning in her
husband's behalf. A Cleveland
newspaper usually displayed
a "Bob and Martha win'
headline after a senatorial
victory.
At His Side
She was at his side in three
winning campaigns for sena
tor from Ohio and in his three
unsuccessful bids for the Re
publican presidential nomina
tion. Illness kept her from taking
an active part in his last try
for office in 1952. The follow
ing year Taft died of cancer
Born in Wenona, Minn., in
1889, she met Taft while his
father was President and her
father, the late Lloyd W.
Bowers, was solicitor general
in the William Howard Taft
administration. They were
married on Oct. 17, 1915.
Helped Form League
Mrs. Taft helped organize
the National League of Wom
en Voters and was active in
the local chapter until 1941.
In that year she resigned be
cause of the local league's
support of repeal of the Neu
trality Act. '
Mrs. Taft is survived by
four sons. They are William
Howard Taft III, former am
bassador to Ireland; State
Rep. Robert A. Taft Jr., a lo
cal attorney; Lloyd Taft, for
mer assistant publisher of the
Cincinnati Times-Star, recent
ly sold to the Cincinnati Post,
and Horace Taft, a member of
the Yale faculty. Lloyd Taft
is traveling in Europe.
Lehi IV Skipper
Returns To Stales

Baker, skipper of the raft
Lehi IV that floated from
California , to Hawaii in 69
days flew to his California
home today, this time in
about eight hours.
Baker, his wife and two at
tractive daughters, Jackie
and Tammy, left aboard a
TransoceanAirline plane for
Los Angeles at midnight
(p.s.t.).
But even in leaving, the
bearded Baker had his sights
on a new and more lengthy
ocean voyage.
Within two years he plans
to sail from the Persion Gulf
to South America aboard a
similar though larger raft
than the Lehi.
Three of his former crew
members aboard the Lehi saw
their skipper off at Honolulu
International Airport.
Only one could not wish
the Bakers bon voyage. Tan
garoa, the ocean-going mon
grel pup who served as the
Lehi's mascot, was not allow
ed out of quarantine for the
departure.
Southern California
Gets Hot Weather
Los Angeles (UPD More
hot weather was predicted to
day for Southern California
with temperatures soaring
above 100 degrees in many
areas.
The hot spell Thursday
sent the thermometer in
downtown Los Angeles to 99
degrees, the highest tempera
ture of the year for the city
and the hottest Oct. 2 in the
Weather Bureau's records.
Eye-irritating smog ac
companied the rising tempera
tures making the hot weather
even more uncomfortable.
Readings raneed 20 degrees
above the average for this
time of year.
Highs topped 100 in sur
rounding areas such as Glen-
dale which recorded 102, Van
Nuys, -106, North Hollywood
De Gaulle Offers
Five Year Plan
For Algerians

day offered a revolutionary
"five-year plan" for the eco
nomic and social development
of Algeria. He challenged the
Moslem rebels to lay down
their arms and build the coun
try's future together with
France.
De Gaulle announced his
long - awaited Algerian' pro
gram in a major speech be
fore a cheering crowd of 7,000
Moslems and European set
tlers who packed the Place
de la Breche. Red-bereted par
atroopers with tommyguns
slung across their chests stood
shoulder to shoulder on each
side of the broad boulevard
leading into the square.
Announces 'Future'
"I have come here to an
nounce to you the future of
Algeria," De Gaulle said.
Under his plan, De Gaulle
said, at least one-tenth of the
young men joining the French
civil administration during the
next five years must come
from "the Algerian commun
ities." He said his five-year pro
gram also called for:
Distribution o f 500,000
acres of arable land to the
Moslems.
New jobs must be found
for 400,000 Moslems. There
are an estimated one million
unemployed Moslems in Al
geria and they constitute the
main manpower pool of the
rebels.
Must Go To Schools

a fraction about 120,000
Moslem children, go to school
in the territory.
The speech was the first in
which De Gaulle spelled out
the ways and means with
which he hoped to settle the
four-year-old Algerian rebel
lion. "One hundred million men
have decided to build together
their future in liberty, equal
ity and fraternity," he said.
The general appealed to the
Algerian rebels to lay down
their arms and end the con
flict. "Cease these absurd com
bats and immediately you will
see hope flourish throughout,"
he said.
Violence Stalks
Cyprus Island

stalked this Mediterranean
island from end to end today
in a savage outbreak of Greek
guerrilla violence amounting
almost to a declaration of
open war.
Two young Britons and a
Greek were killed Thursday
night and early today by the
grenadiers and gunmen of the
bloddy-handed EOKA under
ground, and at least six Brit
ish soldiers and a Turkist civi
lian were wounded.
In half a dozen instances,
British truck convoys were
attacked by guerrillas who
hurled bombs from hiding
and then sprayed the wreck
age with gunfire. A British
infantry patrol was similarly
ambushed in western Cyprus.
The Greek victim of the
day's violence was shot and
killed by masked men outside
a cafe in the village of Kaza
phany, presumably because
he had cooperated with the
British island government.
