000 were seized by U. S.
Treasury Agents here Wed
nesday night in the first step
of a nation-wide drive to halt
the use of contraband health
remedies from Communist
China.

said the contraband was seiz
ed during a raid on Cy Wo
Tong and Co.', a wholesale
firm operated by John Hong
Hall.
Similar Steps Planned
Minskoff said similar steps
will be taken in New York,
Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle
and Honolulu in an effort to
wipe out the illegal herb
trade. He said there would
be raids on as many as 20
more stores in the San Fran
cisco area.
The importation of herbs
and medicines from the Chin
ese mainland has been illeg
al since the trading with the
enemy act was made into law
in 1950. However, many Chin
ese Americans still have
more faith in the ancieni rem
edies than in modern medical
practices.
Obtained in Chicago
Minskoff . said Hall admit
ted obtaining his preparations
from Joe Quong, 58, a Chi
cago laundry operator who
was arrested earlier this week
in Illinois on a smuggling
complaint and now is free
on $1,500 bail.
Quong obtained the illegal
herbs and drugs from firms
in Vancouver, Ontario and
Hong Kong and forwarded
the contraband to dealers
throughout the country, said
Minskoff.

swept a wide region of South
ern France today, causing at
least 34 deaths and threaten
ing a mud bath for the Mar-
coule atom plant.
The death toll was expected
to rise. Four persons were
listed as nussing. beverai

known dead. Property dam
age was believed heavy.
A torrent of mud surged
toward the national atomic
laboratory at Marcoule on the
Ceze river. Officials said the
massive mud wave slowed
down 30 miles east of Mar
coule, but the threat to the
riverside plant remained.
Arraignment Set for
Central Point Men
George Leo Fulcher and
Rex Arthur Roades, both of
xoute 1, box 447, Central
Point, were arrested Wednes
day afternoon by sheriff's
deputies and lodged in Jack
son county jail with bail set
at S500 each.
The men are charged with
assault and battery on com
plaints signed by their wives.
They are scheduled to be ar
raigned in district court this
afternoon.
