Inborn Tendency To Psycho

A fine woman recently
wrote me one of the most in

Interesting let
ters I have re
ceived. She
says I have
been right
when I have
preached i n
this column
that the per
son who in
herits a ten-
Dr. Alvarez dencv to rjsv-
chosis or insanity doesn't ne
cessarily have to go ahead and
succumb to it, or give in to
it, or accept it as inevitable.
Many a person can fight
it and hold it down. As she
says, "Certainly, a tendency
to a psychotic pattern is in
herited, but this factor of in
heritance need not produce
a mental breakdown." Wisely,
she says that even great stress
in a poor environment need
not conquer the person-. She
thinks many people with a
tendency to psychosis get into
serious trouble only because
they allow many unfortunate
tendencies to take control of
their lives: tendencies, for in
stance, to associate with bad
company and to drink heav
ily. What she regrets is that
many persons with a poor
nervous inheritance w o n't
make a big enough effort to
live sanely and to hang onto
their sanity. She, who is now
43, says that every three
years since she was 16, she
has had "cycles of a year
long, inky depression. In be
tween I have had sky-rocketing
highly delusioned manic
periods."
Obvious When Small
She says, as many other
such people say, that her poor
mental, inheritance was ob
vious when she was smalL
She says, "I was the unhap
piest, most sensitive, worried
little girl that ever drew
breath." None of her brothers
and sisters got what she got
out of the family inheritance.
She goes on to say, "In my
youth I never drew comfort
from friends or their compan
ionship, and I never really
lost myself in play. I passed
on into a turbulent, delin
quent teen-ager. I was as cold
as a chisel. Like so many
mildly psychotic persons, I
never had one good friend.
Later, I had a fling with al
coholism. "But I'll say this much for
myself, I kept working even
in my deepest depressions. I
read avidly the old phil
osophies, the classics, the Bi
ble, and in fact anything that
I thought might inspire me.
"Gradually over the years
I've changed to the point
where warm human relation
ships feed my soul. At last
I can feel at one with my peo
ple, and not always set apart
from society. I have learned
how to handle both my de
pressions and my manic per
iods. Amazingly enough, I
went through my last manic
period without 'falling apart
at. the seams. I was able to
keep at work. When the ma
nia started, I felt the old ela
tion seeping into my blood,
and I suspected what was
coming.

control, and the sane part of
my mind came to grips with
the insane ' part. Although I
went through my old pattern
of developing a religious ma
nia, I was able to hold my
tongue, and not to start pre
paring everyone about me for
the coming of the end of the
world. I thought that when
that came I was to be the
Lamb of God and to judge
the world. I managed to keep
acting rationally both at the
office and in my home, and
actually I doubt if I .roused
the suspicions of anyone that
anything was wrong with me.
I am sure that no one in the
office knew anything of the
mental storm through, which
I was passing.
"Just now the scale is out
of balance again, and I have
recently had to come to grips
with my old devil, the de
pression. But now no one but
my husband and my psychi
atrist know what is going on
in me. Fortunately, I can face
the depression without any
self-pity, and outwardly I
seem to be cheerful. I can
conceal my torture."
Fortunately, this fine wom
an succeeded so well in build
ing a good life that she was
able to get and hold a won
derful husband. She says her
marriage has been beautiful.
Now she has given up her
job at the office so as to be
a better wife; also, she is
studying hard to take univer
sity entrance examination.
She keeps going sensibly even
when, at times, "nothing
seems to have a purpose or
fulfillment." She looks on her
trouble as an illness that will
pass. "My aim is to prove that
in my case at least, severe
mental illness has not been
allowed to gain the upper
hand and to shatter my pur
pose in life."
Wasted Several Years
She is very bitter at the
Freudian brand of psychiatry
on which she says she wasted
several years; but she is very
grateful to trie fine, old-type
psychiatrist who, for the last
20 years has stood by her,

and has helped her greatly.
This man is now encouraging
her to write an autobiography
which, he thinks, as I do,
could be of great help to the
millions of people who are
now suffering as she has suf
fered. I may have mentioned in
this column before that I have
probably the largest collec
tion in the world of autobiog
raphies written ty people
who Once were psychotic, in
sane, alcoholic, addicted to
drugs, epileptic, or mentally
or physically handicapped in
any way. I have learned much
from these autobiographies,
many of which are so well
written that, like Pepy's Di
ary, they ought to be read
by thousands of educated people.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to atteimot to diac-
nose by mail.
