can cook as well as my Helen can, I
gave instant orders. "No more frogs shall
be brought into this house especially by
minors!"
"Aw," Dickie complained.
"Does that mean the one I have penned
in the broom closet?" Davie asked.
"YIKE!" Helen squealed, leaping back
up on the refrigerator. "Get it out!"
The crisis over, my wife said she
realized that boys like frogs so why
didn't I accompany them to the pond and
teach them a few things about frog life
so they could turn their hobby into pro
fitable education? Among other things,
she suggested I teach them that frogs are
much happier in ponds than in houses.
"Here's the encyclopedia," she rasped,
jamming the "F" volume in my stomach.
"Go forth and teach."
"Come on, Dad!" one of the boys cried.
"We know where the big ones are!" They
sprinted off to the woods with me
lumbering after them.
"Here we are, Dad!" Davie shouted.
"Let's catch some!"
"Let's catch our breath first," I
bleated, sitting down on a log and open
ing the encyclopedia. "Let's see, now, did
you boys know that there are more than
1,700 kinds of frogs?"
"Gosh," said Dickie.
"Gee," said Davie.
"And that frogs are valuable helpers
to man because they eat insects? Or
that many frogs can jump 20 times their
own length?" '
"Can you catch a frog, Daddy?" Davie
asked with a smile.
"Yeah," Dickie chimed in, "I bet Daddy
is the best frog-catcher in the world!"
"Well, I wouldn't go that far," I
replied, "but it says that frogs are near
sighted on land and that's where I'm
nearsighted, too, so it really ought to be
a fair contest."
"There's a spotted one, Daddy!" Dickie
squealed, pointing.
"That'll be a leopard frog, son," I said,
consulting the book quickly.
"Catch him, Daddy!" Davie begged.
"Hold the book and don't make any
noise," I told him, sneaking carefully in
to position behind my prey. I stabbed my
hand out just as the frog jumped. I
jumped after him, but in my eagerness
failed to see a tree root half-submerged
in the pond. In a trice, I too was half
submerged in the pond.
Soaked through and chilled, I herded
my charges home.
"Daddy tried to catch a leopard!" one
of them shrieked to his mother.
"A great big one with spots all over
him!" his brother added.
"A leopard! My goodness!" Helen
chuckled, "it looks more as if he had
tried to catch a fish."
"I do ri-not c-care to discuss it," I
trembled, striding to the bathroom with
as much dignity as a man can summon
while trailing water down the hallway.
