Jet Tanker Sets Seven Records
Spokane (UPD A KC135
tanker plane smashed two So

world's marks in a single
flight this past week.
The tanker averaged 587.13
miles per hour while carry

grams (22,046 pounds) on a
3,107 -mile closed - circuit
course between Fairchild Air
Force Base here and Hoquiam,

Air Force Turns
Effort To Another
Test of Atlas
Cape Canaveral, Fla. - (UPD -The
Air Force went back to
work Friday determined to
make the next attempt at a
6,325-mile Atlas interconti
nental missile flight a sue-j
cess. :
The first attempt at send- j
ing the 100-ton Atlas the na-
tion's first intercontinental i
ballistic missile on an ocean-1
spanning flight Thursday end
ed in explosion after only 80
seconds of flight. But another
effort appeared likely soon.
Soviet Success Told
Success would have meant
the United States had at last
countered Russia's boast it
alone has an ICBM that could
devastate targets on another
continent with a hydrogen
warhead. The Soviets have
said they shot a tactical mis
sile more than 5,000 miles in
August, 1957.
The Air Force, which rare-
ly offers an explanation of
a failure, made no exception
to the rule after Thursday's
flop. In a brief statement
after the blowup, officials said
only that the Atlas "exploded
and destroyed itself" and that
the "cause of the malfunction
is not yet known."
600 Miles About Earth
If the flight had been suc
cessful, the massive weapon
would have climbed almost
600 miles above the earth, and
moments later would have
dropped its special nose cone
into the South Atlantic at a
predetermined area 6,325
miles from Cape Canaveral.
Unlike the first fully-powered
Atlas that wobbled up
and exploded after 70 seconds
of flight July 19, the missile
fired Thursday rose skyward
in apparently perfect takeoff.
But 80 seconds later, it blew
up in a brilliant ball of orange
flame and plunged in smok
ing fragments into the Atlantic.
Change in Minor
Smoking Ban Urged
Salem-flJPD-The Legislative
Interim Judicial Committee
has recommended that a ban
on smoking by minors under
18 be changed to include only
those 16 or under.
The committee said the ban
on smoking by minors under
18 years was unenforceable.
The report sajd most per
sons disapprove of such smok
ing but only a small percent
age believe it to be a "hein
ous" crime to be punished by
fine or jail.
Enforcement follows the
public attitude and minors
know they will not be prose
cuted and therefore flaunt the
law, the report said.
The committee said it be
lieved the public generally
opposed smoking at the age
of 16 and that this ban would
have a better chance of en
forcement.

Snake River Area
Closed To Anglers
Portland' -(DPD- State Game
Director P. W. Schneider
Thursday ordered closure of
the Snake river to all angling
from the downstream side of
Pine Creek to the upstream
side of the cofferdam in the
Oxbow dam construction area.
Schneider said the closure
was an emergency measure
to protect large numbers of
steelhead and fall chinook
salmon which are now block
ed from further upstream mi
gration by the failure of fish
passage facilities at the Ox
bow dam.
The game director said the
structural failure of the fish
passage facilities has prevent
ed these fish from going up
stream to their spawning
beds. The closure will remain
in effect until rescinded by
further order.
In Boise, Ida., the Idaho
Fish and Game Commission
also closed to all fishing the
same area on the Snake for
fear of over-harvesting of up
stream migrating salmon and
steelhead.
Construction workers Wed
nesday started lifting the fish
from the cofferdam with dip
nets until temporary fishtraps
can be rushed to completion.
