Woman Builds Business
On New 'Hep Cap' Beanies
By GAY PAULEY
UPI Women'i Editor
Locust Valley, N.Y.-dTD-The
beanie, "old hat" in the world
of fashion, is building a suc
cessful new business for Mrs.
Robert B. Smitru
All because the young ma
tron thought up amusing ways
to re-do the small, brimless
felts which are classics of
headcovers.
Now, children in all parts
of the country are wearing
beanies decorated with small,
felt skunks and proclaiming
"Hi Stinky"; beanies with
red-nosed penquin and the
words "Cool, Man, Cool";
beanies with an alligator and
"See You Later"
Mrs. Smith, whose husband
is with a New York bank, got
into the beanie business as a
result of a doll shop she open
ed in this plush Long Island
- suburb
"And I got into the doll
business because I have three
small girls," said the tall.
brown-haired Mrs. Smith. "
always have sewed, and
sewed, and I started design
ing doll clothes for the kids
Pretty soon, I was also sew
ine for the neighbors chil
dren."
Opens Shop
Three years ago she opened
the "Little Women" shop
"This summer," she said, "I
decided I needed some gim
mick to perk up sales. My
husband said. 'Why not do
something with hats; every
body loves a hat.' "
Her first beanie featured
a glue-on mouse and a big-
lettered "EEK". But she
dreamed up "about 40" dif
ferent styles and with Mrs.
Robert Dunns, a neighbor and
"my right arm" in the doTl
shop, they went in search of
a manufacturer.
"We called on several pros
pects," said Mrs. Smith, "and
were so scared someone would
steal our idea we would hard
ly open our box of samples
until we'd already discussed
royalties."
Eventually, they made a
deal with a manufacturer for
the basic felts and ' with a
high -class distributor and
"Hep Caps" were on their
way. '
Mrs. Smith said her eldest
daughter, Sandy, 11, designed
the beanie which so far has
been the biggest hit. It fea
tures a face right out of a
horror movie and "scare"
uneven lettering of the word
"MAD!"
Other designs include the
words "in my head" with a
hole in the beanie; a daisy
Food Expert Explains
Kitchen Chemistry
Ithaca, N. Y.-IUPD-A full
course meal on the family
dinner table may have as
many as 500 chemical addi
tives in it to build its quality
or nutritive value, says a food
expert.
Prof. D. B. Hand, head of
the Department of Food Sci
ence and Technology at the
New York State Agfricultural
Experiment Station at Gen
eva, says federal regulations
make sure that these addi
tives are in the best interests
of consumers.
Hand told a meeting of the
State Nutrition Institute at
Cornell University that some
chemical additives may be
used until they can be shown
harmful, but "the more ad
vanced food companies have
gone to great lengths to estab
lish harmlessness before use."
The professor said an ex
panded research program is
needed to develop safer and
simpler testing methods.

with three petals on, two fall
ing off and the words "He
loves me . . ."; a red and
black Jadybug with the words
"Go Home"; and a turtle with
"Go slow."
The hats caught on before
Mrs. Smith could get the pro
duction line for putting on
the decorations out of her
own house and into a. factory.
As a result, she said, just
about every nook and cranny
is filled with felt or glue.
"My husband takes the
whole thing with good hu
mor," she said. "Since the hats
actually were his suggestions,
he keeps saying 'I told you
so. "

Washington Before de
ciding on a house, .test the
traffic between it and your
office or your husband's
office.
This pointer comes from
Representative Iris Blitch (D)
Ga., a petite lawmaker who
runs two homes, one in near
by Arlington, Va., and the
other in her hometown of
Homerville, Ga.
Mrs. Blitch told an inter
viewer that "I am a woman
who likes a house I'm not
happy without one." She said
she knew when she was first
elected to Congress in 1954
that she would have to find
a house in the Washington
area.
A "for sale" sign led her to
a house "that just suited me
the floor plan was just what
I wanted." The first thing
she did, after sensing that the
house "had the right feeling
for me," was to make a test
drive to Capitol Hill.
"I Made the test at the very
busiest time of the day when
traffic was the heaviest and
under the worst conditions
because it was raining," Mrs.
Blitch recalled. "It took me
25 minutes but I knew that
by leaving a little earlier or
later than the rush hour, I
could cut down on the time
I find now that I can get to
my office in 12 minutes in
normal traffic."
Redecorating Fun
She purchased the one-story
brick home because pay
in e n t s were cheaper than
renting in the long run and I
am making a good invest
ment." Then she had fun re
decorating the home. She
chose white, black, and pink
tones as her basic colors.
The Congresswo man,
a youthful and attractive size
12, said the living room has
a huge brick fireplace which
she painted white. She used
a white, textured wall paper
and chose white draperies
for the windows. A black and
white cotton print covers the
sofa and accent is given by
cerise pull-up chairs.
In the dining "L" she has
a table, buffet, and chairs up
holstered in a black and white
stripe. French doors open on
to a glassed-in porch with
black and cerise vinyl tile
and wrought iron furniture
upholstered in pink and
black.
Mrs. Blitch thinks the col
ors give an air of lightness
and spaciousness to the house.
They contrast pleasingly with
her Georgia home, which is
done in tones of beige, brown
and rose. She and her hus
band, who have been married
2 8 years, have remodeled
their Georgia home three
times. The last such adven
ture was to give her office
space.
Runs Two Homes
As a result of running two
homes, the Congresswoman
said she will welcome the
day when all equipment is
standardized. She said this
would make it easier to fix
appliances if something goes
wrong with them. As it is, she
said, the equipment in her
two home.s take different
kinds of care and remedies.
But Mrs. Bitch said that
"great advances have been
made in house planning" such
activities as the forthcoming
Woman's Conference on Hous
ing "will spur even more pro
gress." The conference to which
she referred will be held in
Washington, October 14-16, to
provide homemakers with an
opportunity to exchange
ideas on the kind of a home
they would like. It is spon
sored by the National Associa
tion of Home Builders and
the United Industry Commit
tee on Housing, a group of
allied housing industry organizations.
