Declared Reduced
To Save Chinook

Oxbow dam below 2,000
second feet by the Idaho Pow
er company on Aug. 26, was
necessary to save the fall Chi
nook ' salmon run, according
to R. P. Parry, general coun
sel for the power company.
Parry made his statement
at a conference called by Gov.
Robert D. Holmes after he
had received reports that the
reduction in the flow of the
Snake river had killed many
fish. The Idaho Power com
pany's attorney declared that
its observers had failed to find
any dead fish, and said that
the company had forces work
ing night and day to complete
the fish trap which had been
damaged at one end.
He said this work should

Albert Day, director of the
Oregon State Fish Commis
sion, expressed fear that the
fall chinook run in the Snake
river would be lost.
However, Lyman Wilbur.
vice president of Morrison-
Knudsen company, contractors
for the dam construction for
Idaho Power, said that he had
personally been on the job
supervising the installation of
temporary dams to save the
fish run. "Our only concern
right now is to save this fall's
salmon run," Wilbur said. He
also pointed out that pending
completion of the fish trap,
salmon coming to the foot of
the Oxbow dam will be net
ted and placed in tank trucks
and transported to the river
above the dam. This is the
same method used during con
struction of the Brownlee dam
15 miles above.
Good Said Accomplished
Gov. Holmes in concluding
the session declared that he
believed a great deal of good
had been accomplished in
calling the conference.
"I want to thank the Idaho
Power company representa
tives for being here," he said.
"I only wish that they had
advised us earlier of this situa
tion. I certainly hope that
their estimates of completing
the fish trap in two weeks is
correct."

Pony Express Set
To Operate Again
Portland - Pony express
riders will thunder down his
toric Oregon trials with the
mail again next June as part
of the state's centennial cele
bration. Plans to re-enact part of
Oregon's past are being for
mulated by Centennial Pony
Express, Inc., of Baker. Presi
dent of the group is Stanley
W. Thompson and Vice Presi
dent is Harry Long, both of
Baker.
Thompson said the riders
will bear real mail and may
contend with mock Indian at
tacks and bandit forays June
7 through 10 as a prelude to
the centennial exposition that
opens at Portland June 10 for
100 days.
Thompson said pony ex
press booths will be set up in
Oregon cities and towns under
auspices of local riding
groups. Special stationery
will be sold to persons who
wish to send letters by pony
express.
