TORNADO POLISHING
FOR VIKING RUCKUS
HERE FRIDAY EVENING
Black Tornado gridman of
Medford high today finished
the heavy work for their
North Salem game and will
complete the preparations
with a light -workout Thurs
day.
Medford and the Vikings
will have an 8 p.m. kick-off
time at the local stadium on
Friday as they launch their
respective 1958 campaigns.
The tussle is, of course, a non
counter since the Tornado
competes in District 6 A-l and
North Salem in District 8.
Medford head mentor Fred
Spiegelberg stated that a
scrimmage of about 15 min
utes duration was planned for
this afternoon as the Tornado
worked to add polish to its at
tack and strength to its de
fense. The Tornado switched to a
one-per-day practice schedule
on Tuesday after two appear
ances on the drill field on
Monday. Pass defense has
been getting some particular
attention from day to day.
There are indications that
the Vikings from the Capital
city have geared an aerial of
fensive for the new season
and have the hands to make
it click. Adding to the possi
bility that Salem will take to
the air against Medford is the
fact that passes worked well
against the Tornado last fell
when the Viks nipped the
southern Oregon club 7 to 6.
Fontaine Out
Medford's squad has had its
troubles with the flu bug, or
some sort of virus, and the
latest victim is Jim Fontaine,
senior tackle. Fred Funston,
senior back, is back with the
squad after his bout with ill
ness and may see quite a bit
of service, at least on defense,
against North Salem.
Pete Rasmussen, senior end
who hurt his knee in drill is
now "hobbling around," Spie
gelberg reported. He's not
likely to see action this week,
according to the coach.
The Friday night tussle here
should be a help in the deter
mination, as the season prog
resses, of the comparative
strengths of clubs about the
state. Medford and North Sa
lem are listed among top con
tenders in their respective
districts.
In another Friday game,
Grants Pass, with a high pre
season rating in District 6,
plays Albany of District 8
Three other District 6 clubs
meet teams of District 5 this
week end. Klamath Falls
plays Marshfield, Crater goes
against Cottage Grove and
Ashland meets Roseburg.

Portland - Elk and deer
hunters are advised that they
have only one more week to
get their applications in if
they want to be included in
the drawings for controlled
and management area tags
and permits. Filing deadline
for all unit and controlled
hunts is Sept. 15.
Hunters are also reminded
that these applications must
be received by the game com
mission by 5 p.m. on that
date. Applications received
after that date will not be al
lowed in the drawings.
