Cheatham Goes 144.46 for Major
Honors in Northwest Gas Meet

hour yesterday as he set three
records and gleaned all ma
jor honors in the second an
nual Northwest Gasoline
championship drag races of
the Southern Oregon Timing
association at the Camp
White strip.
Cheatham outroared a field
of 175 entries from Oregon,
Washington, California and
Arizona to capture top time
and top eliminator prizes and
to win his A dragster class.
He was the star of the show
as 13 strip marks tumbled in
27 classes in the biggest meet
for drag racers ever held in
southern Oregon.
The 144.46 turned by the
Californian yesterday and his
sparkling elapsed time of
9.97 seconds, cracked the
strip marks of 142.85 mph
and 10.25 seconds he estab
lished in time runs on Satur
day, first day of the meet.
Top Sunday speed, attained
over the one-fourth mile con
crete course from a standing
start, also goes into the SOTA
books as new local standard
for A dragsters.
$200 Bond
A $200 savings bond went
to the Sunnyvale man for the
new speed record and he
picked up another $50 as top
eliminator. Record prior to
the week end meet was
134.24 mph set in the first an
nual Northwest Gas cham
pionships a year ago by the
sleek Glass Slipper of Sacra
mento, Calif. One of Cheath
am's four trophies was for his
top time on Saturday.
Cheatham's torrid machine,
which exceeded 140 mph six
times in the two days, beat
out the Olympia, Wash., Cap
itol City Cogs dragster, pilot
ed by Terrell Poage, for class
laurels. Poage turned 133.33
on two occasions with the
Chrysler-powered racer.
Zombie, one of the top local
entries, continued its hot pace
by writing in a new record
in its A competition class.
But Hewitt pushed the Wheel
ers club machine to 113.20

They saw cars travel at some
of the fastest speeds reached
by man on the ground in this
part of Oregon.
SOTA officials announced
that the final scheduled rac
ing slate of the current sea
son will be held Sunday, Sept.
21. This will be the annual
charity benefit race with all
proceeds going to the United
Medford crusade and the Ash-land-Talent
Youth fund.

But even the champion
was doubtful after that.
"I'm not putting well," he
complained.
It was Robbins opinion
that Charley Coe of Okla
homa City might be rated as
the "man to beat."

erful tailbacks, Paul Lowe,
Grimm Mason, Dainard Paul
son, and Leon Criner racked
up over 380 yards in total
offense. Lowe connected with
two passes in two attempts
both going for touchdowns.
