    Colorado Buffs May Give
Oklahoma Biqqest Scare

Kansas City, Mo. -(CPU-Oklahoma,
returning three start

national power but may get
its biggest scare in 11 Big
Eight conference season from
Colorado.
The Buffs are loaded and
cries of "this is the year" for
a Colorado victory have been
-from" Krth pamiu '
Coach Dallas Ward as 19
lettermen including six start

a big push to end Oklahoma's
10-year dominance of the
Big Eight. The time and place
to look for one of the upsets
of the season is Nov. 1 at
Boulder when the Buffs en
tertain the Sooners.

Coach Cliff Speegle at Ok

his Cowboys are not eligible

The University of Houston

Newman Is Key
His chances for a banner
season rest largely on the
arm of quarterback Bob New
man, who completed 104 pass
attempts last year and was the
nation's total offense leader.
The all-coast aerial artist will
have three prime targets -all
coast Don Ellingsen, Jack
Fanning and Bill Steiger.
Ellingsen and Fanning fin
ished one-two among confer
ence pass-grabbers last sea
son and Fanning took nine for
touchdowns to make him the
national leader in that de
partment. Steiger laid out last
season because of an injury
but was high among All-America
selections for 1956.
Running Atiack Needed
Sutherland has been work
ing on the Cougar ground
game to make it more effec
tive. It was so lightly regard
ed last year that some oppon
ents virtually ignored it and
threw a four-man line at the
WSC passing attack.
Besides Newman, the best
backs are scatback Carl Ket
chie and fullback Ed Stevens.
Laroy Rath also is a bright
prospect. There may be help
both in the line and back
field from untested sopho
mores or transfers.
The line has plenty of vet
eran strength but Sutherland
hopes to improve the quality
of his depth.
The best lettermen are
tackles Ray Blier, 212 pounds,
Dan Verhey, 215, Vel West,
215 'and Al Williamston, 205;
guards Angelo Brovelli, 215;
Dick Farrar, 205; and George
Sontnis, 205, and center Merl

If the Cougar defense im
proves, Sutherland will be a
tough contender. This is his
