American intervention to help
the Nationalist Chinese de
fend the islands they hold
near the Red Chinese main

He said this was a "hor
rendous decision." The U. S.
government, Acheson argued,
has allowed itself to be trap
ped by both the opposing
Chinese forces in a conflict it
cannot win.
In a long public statement,
Acheson urged that "cool
headed friends from other
countries" be consulted be
fore the United States takes
on a fight which could lead to
another world war.
The "obvious goal" for the
United States now, Acheson
said, should be to get the Na
tionalists to withdraw from
the Quemoy Islands just off
the mainland.
Incredible Folly'
. He said it was "incredible
folly" to let the Nationalists
put about, one-third of their
armed- forces on "untenable
Quemoy." In the face of Com
munist China's present air

reserve components of the
Army. As we see it, the limi
tation placed on the numer
ical strength of the armed
forces by Congress dictates an
intensified training program
to include the week end train
ing that the Oregon National
Guard has. recently under
taken. How the training program
works-An eight hour training
period on two Sundays a
month gives us the opportun
ity for a complete realistic
training program. It affords
the National Guard trainee a
chance to place in practice on
the' ground the tactical as
pects of infantry warfare that
he has learned in theory in
the classroom. '
Particular Advantage
The outdoor type of train
ing is of particular advantage
to pur foo'd ' service, vehicle
drivers, and communication
personnel. The modern con
cept of atomic warfare i. de
mands thorough proficiency
in high speed -mobility, dis
persion of force, and decisive
action on the part of ; the
smaller units. Our training
program is geared to achieve
these ends. ' "
Is this program new? No
it is not. A majority of the
states have already com
menced this type of week end
training, ' some as early as
195JV, either on a straight
week end basis or on -a com
bination of evening and Sun
day drills. The results of this
training have been most gra
tifying from a standpoint of
combat effectiveness of the
National Guard trainee.
Problems - Naturally some
problems have arisen as a re
sult of the change over to
week end training. The great
est problem arises when
guardsmen are employed on
Sundays, and this is true of
many during the fruit harvest
season. However, some, local
employers have been very co
operative in arranging work
schedules which, permit the
guardsmen to attend week end
training.

not present a problem of any

choice and still receive full
credit for the training. The
only requirement being that
the men notify their comman
der of their intentions before
hand. Who may participate At
the present time the National
Guard is the only reserve
component that offers young
men a chance to enlist, then
finish , their high school edu
cation, , then take six months
of active duty training, and
then finish their military ob
ligation in reserve training at
home. This isAt particular in
terest to the young man who
desires to complete his aca
demic or on-the-job training
without the interference of
two years of active duty im
posed by a draft call.
At present the National
Guard is permitted to enlist
high school seniors and men
with prior service only. I
must emphasize, however,
that , the . Oregon National
Guard . does have a strength
limitation which is now very
near ceiling. When 'that
strength is reached no further
enlistments will be accepted.
We are most interested in in
creasing the strength of the
local guard units before the
ceiling is reached.

Two Sentenced in
District Court
Arnold L. pden, 18, Crater
hotel, Medford, and George
Stacy Nelson, 22, Grants Pass,
were sentenced to six-month
jail terms Friday by District
Judge 'James Main. The
youths had been arrested for
making a false statement in
writing to procure benefit.
In addition to the jail sen
tence, which is subject to
parole, they were each fined
$5 court costs. They had cash
ed a post-dated $25 check
drawn on a non-existant bank
account at a local business
establishment on Aug. 21, ac
cording to district court
records. 4 '
Bert Parker, Shady Cove,
appeared before Judge Main
Friday on a charge of grand
larceny. He is accused of tak
ing a car belonging to Wil
liam C. Kennedy Aug. . 23.
Parker waived attorney and
requested a preliminary hear
ing. Judge Main set Sept. 9
for the hearing and ordered
