There was a close-up of the
driver's hand clutching a stub
nosed gun. That was a .31 cal
iber colt, one of the young-',
gters said.
There was a lively contro
versy over how the ten-year-old
could know not only the
caliber of the gun and its
make, but that it was a five
shooter instead of a six.
The answer was that one of
his playmates had one and it
was down in the basement
where they had been playing
that afternoon. He went down
and brought it up. '
Sure enough, it was a 1849

Paul rang for his secretary
and asked what had happened
to the ashtray on his desk.
She didn't know. It had
been there a half an hour be
fore and no one else had been
in his office except his wife
who had left shortly before
I arrived.
When we reached Paul's
home a couple of hours later,
the missing ashtray was there.
The little piece Paul had been
using was a glass hat. It stood
about three or four inches
high. Why was she so inter-
ested in it?
"Because it happens to be
a rather rare pieoe," she re-
plied, "and also I like the
color."
GOOD PRINTS VALUABLE
The fact that the name of
the artist or maker of a print
is not known is relatively un
important if the picture is a
good one.
It is true that a certain
snob value may be added
when the origin is known, but
that is actually only inciden
tal. Especially so in sports
scenes and particularly in
those involving hunting or
fishing. y
i An example is in a decision
I saw a man make recently
between two prints. The seller
would take only cash. No
checks. The buyer had only
enough folding money on him
to pay for one.
One of the prints was a
small Currier & Ives, measur
ing about 9 by 13 inches and
published in 1883. It was en
titled "Shooting on the Bay
Shore" and it showed a man
firing into a flight of ducks
through some bulrushes. The
print was priced at $175, a
very good buy considering its
excellent condition and the
fact that it is usually offered
at $300 or more.

Colt pocket revolver with a
three-inch, octagonal barrel.
The cylinder7was fouled with
dust and grime. So was the
barrel, and one of the ivory
grips was broken off. None
theless, one could still read
the legend "Address Col Saml
Colt New York, U. S." After
the revolver had been worked
on by a gunsmith who cleaned
it thoroughly and restored the
missing grip, it was good
enough to sell readily for
$150. In good working order
it would have, been worth
twice as much.
All of which is by way of
saying that any early Colt,
just so long as it is recogniz
able as such, is a valuable
piece of property.
The color was a deep blue.
The crown of the hat looked
like the bottom of an inverted
tumbler, a fact which identi
fied it as having been made
in a tumbler mold. The brim
was that of a wide sombrero,
fully an inch wide and waving
in a way that made it conve
nient for. holding a cigar or
cigarette.
When Paul learned that the
value of such pieces runs from
$20 to $50, he protested that
she was looting the firm of
one of its assets. The firm
could have it back, she said,
whenever it could give formal
proof of ownership, but until
then she was keeping it.
REGARDLESS OF ARTIST

though the quality of its work
manship and a slight foxxing
along one margin indicated
it was probably of the 1879s
or '80s. As to its origin, the
only indication was the name
"T. J. Jones, Lith. New York,"
a maker that is still unknown
to me and also to the man
who bought it.
The scene showed a flight
of ducks arrowing through an
angry sky as a red sun snowed
itself above the rushes of a
coastal saltmersh. In the right
f orground was a hunter firing
the second barrel of his gun
as one of tne chicks started
to tumble.
The man said who paid $200
for it. He added that he could
always get the Currier &
Ives "Shooting on the Bay
Shore." That was merely a
matter of money.
But "Sunrise in the Marsh
es," unlisted. in the catalogues,
was something he might never
see again, just as he had never
seen it before, and therefore
he bought it.

They were seeing one an
other for about six months be
fore we learned he was mar
ried. We did not like him
from the start because he is a
heavy drinker and we thought
there was something shifty
eyed about him. Well, we cer
tainly turned out to be right.
He has two children and he
will certainly have to con
tinue supporting them.
Adele doesn't seem to un
derstand what she is letting
herself in for. She says we
have no right to run her life
and that she is old enough to
know what she is doing, but
we know she is so much in
love that she just doesn't see
straight anymore. How can
you stop a young girl from
wrecking her life?
Adele L. My parents were
prejudiced against Frank from
the first minute he walked
into the house. They didn't
like the way he was dressed
to call on me, but it happened
that he came straight from
work and didn't have time to
change.
After that, they never even
gave Frank a fair chance.
They didn't listen to anything
he had to say. Frank tried to
explain that he was married
at 18 and more or less roped
in by an older girl, but mys
parents wouldn't listen to any'
of that.
Frank had had a miserable
life. He is only 22 now and
feels that he can't let the rest
of his life go to pot. We are in
love and he wants to marry
me as soon as he is free. Must
a person be condemned for
the rest of his life because of
one mistake?.
The Council: It is very hard
for parents to have to watch
at the sidelines while their
children engage in bloody,
unnecessary and often disas
trous battles with life, -but we
know of no magic formula
that, will prevent such mis
takes. The individual who apr
pears hell-bent on destruction
is driven by forces far more
powerful than any rational
considerations.
Parents can take some con
solation in the following facts:
1. Parents can be wrong too
or at least not as right as
they think they are. 2. Chil
dren sometimes do see their
errors in the nick of time. 3.
Few errors are totally disas
trous. The ability to profit by
mistakes is a big advantage.
All of this may seem to be
small consolation to the
G.L.'s, but perhaps it will help
to cool 'off their frenzy to the
point where they will be able
to lend a somewhat more sym
pathetic ear to Adele's point
of view.
If they can keep their heads
cool and show her they are
willing to understand her
problems and to accept any as
pects of her arguments that
make sense, she may be able
to see the holes in her own
reasoning.
As long as the G.L.'s main
tain an attitude of violent op
position, Adele is driven into
Frank's arms for sympathy
and comfort. Even if she fin
ally begins to see that she'may
be making a mistake, pride
will keep her from acknowl
edging that "Mother and Dad
knew best." She may force
herself to go through with
her plans against her own
better judgement.
On the whole, we know of
no better advice for the Q.L.'s
than to sweat it out, keeping
eyes, ears and hearts open.

Resolution to Back
Program Planned
Plans for presenting a reso
lution backing a wage differ
ential program in lieu of over
time pay were discussed at a
meeting of the Southwest
Oregon chapter of the Oregon
State Employees association
Wednesday ' evening at the
Medford headquarters of the
state forestry department.
The chanter voted to send
two delegates to the state con
vention in November to pre
sent the program to the OSEA.
If the state group adopts the
program it will support it at
the next session of the state
legislature.
The state forestry depart
ment is already working on
some type of wage differen
tial pay for the 1959 fire sea
son, according to Doyle Stock
ton, president of the local
OSEA chapter, but nothing is
definite at the present time.

permit adjacent property to? use
a water main as a lateral water
main; to levy an assessment on the

has heretofore caused a water
main in the City of Medford to
be laid on Black Oak Drive from
Country Club Drive f'to Walden
Place and the Council being of
the opinion that said water main
may be used by the property front
ing on that portion of said main

Club Drive to Walden Pla.e in the
City of Medford, Oregonj and
WHEREAS said water main has
not. as yet, been paid for and it
appearing to the Council that the'
use ' of said water main as a
lateral water main by said property
last above mentioned will not ma
terially interfere with the use
thereof for the purpose for which
it was originally laid, now there
fore, BE IT RESOLVED! BY THE
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MED

SECTION 1 That it is the opinion
of the Council that that part of
the aforementioned water main
laid in the City of Medford de
scribed as follows; to-wit:
As laid on Black Oak Drive from
Country Club Drive to Walden
Place in the City of Medford, Ore
gon. May be used by the property
fronting thereon as a lateral water
main without materially interfering
with the use thereof for the pur
pose of a water main, the purpose
for which it was originally laid
laid, and the Council proposes to
permit the owners of adjacent
property to use the same for lateral
purposes as aforesaid. '
SECTION 2. It is the intention
of the Council to assess the property
fronting on the street wherein said
water main is laid as hereinbefore
last described its proportionate
share of so much of the cost thereof
as equals the special benefit which
will result to said property from
the use of said water main as a
lateral water main of such size as
would be required to supply the
property fronting on said street in
case said water main was rot so
used and the Council has and does
here determine that the sum of
$2.35 per front foot is the cmount
of such special benefit and the
proportionate cost of such a lateral
water main to such property as
aforesaid and intends in assess said
amount against such adjacent prop
erty on account thereof
SECTION 3. The Council will
meet at the hour of 7:30 o'clock
P.M. at the Council Chamber in
the City Hall on the 18th day of
September,-1958, at which time and
place all protests of said assess
ment, as hereinbefore provided for,
will be heard.
SECTION 4. The Recorder is
hereby directed .to serve notice
hereof upon the property owners
aforesaid by publishing this resolu
tion 3 times in a newspaper pub
lished and of general circulation
in said City and by posting the
same in 5 public places in said
City: said publication and said
posting to be not less than 10 days
before the date of said meeting.
