union and western trucking
firms flew to Washington to
day for a meeting' with Team
ster boss James Hoffa to dis
cuss ways of settling a strike
lockout that has tied up long-
haul trucking in 11 Western
states.
Hoffa scheduled the meet
ing tonight after federal me
diators here reported there
was apparently no basis for
immediate resumption of lo
cal negotiations.
All top national Teamster
officers, plus international or
ganizers and presidents of
area councils will be on hand
for Jhe meeting.
The employer committee
will be headed by Robert H.
Cutler of El Paso, Tex., chair
man of the employers' West
ern Labor Policy committee.
Einar Mohn," president of
the Western Conference of
Teamsters, will head the
Western union group.

Lockout Ordered
The dispute began three
weeks ago when Joint Coun
cil 38 of Sacramento called a
strike xf 2,350 members in
central California and west
ern Nevada to back demands
for higher pay.
The council had refused to
ratify a master agreement of
May 27 covering the Far
West. It demanded wage par
ity with San Francisco Bay
area drivers.
Truck owners, contending
Joint Council 38 had agreed
to the May 27 agreement, or
dered an 11-state lockout on
grounds a strike against any
one or more employers was a
strike against all.
A statement Tuesday from
the employers' Western La
bor Policy committee- said:
"Motor carriers of! the 11
western states meeting in San
Francisco in response to con
versations with Teamster
union representatives unani
mously agreed, in the public
interest, to meet in Washing
ton Wednesday-night with re
sponsible representatives of
the Teamsters' union to dis
cuss means of terminating the
present labor controversy."

lice searching for the appar
ently mad killer who hacked
the life from a young Utah
couple. . .
None of the clues has yet
been definitely linked to the
savage murder of Dr. Melvin
Nimer and his wife, Lore
Jean, early Tuesday but po
lice expressed hope that one
of the articles would provide
a lead to the. killer.
Three Children Orphaned
Nimer, 31, 'a well-liked resi
dent surgeon at the Public
Health Service Hospital on
Staten Island, and his pretty
wife were fatally knifed by
a white-masked prowler in
their rented home near ' the
hospital. Their deaths orphan

with a Public Health Service
Hospital in - Phoenix. ". They
were originally from Orem,

Melvin Jr., who set . the
tragedy on its bloody course
when he awoke in , his bed
room about 2 a jn. and saw
a prowler in the room, 'told
police the killer wore a white
mask. Pieces of white cloth
found in the dead, couple's
bedroom and outside the
house were under test to de
termine if they could have
been part of the mask.
The overcoat, a tweed gar
ment in excellent - condition,
was found in the street near
the Nimer home. '

the couple was killed with a
Boy Scout knife belonging to
Melvin Jr., but the knife that
the boy had reported missing
later was found inside a mag
azine in the living room. The
murder weapon still was the
object of a painstaking search
that included the ripping up
of a 10-year-cld growth of
English ivy on the front lawn
of the home.
Melvin Jr., an unusually
bright boy, told police he
screamed when he. saw the
man in his room . and the
prowler began choking him.
Nimer and ; his ' wife ' both
rushed into the room and the
killer turned on them,. Melvin
Jr. ! said. Both husband and
wife received multiple stab

Smith was sentenced to one

Drivers Reminded
Salem Oregon drivers have
been reminded by the depart
ment of motor vehicles, that
"every school bus is an auto
matic stop sign" when stopped
on a city street, rural road or
highway. Also pointed out
was that Oregon law requires
traffic to stop on a two-lane
highway when meeting or
overtaking a school bus which
has halted to load or unload
children.
' On highways having three
or more lanes, vehicles must
stop only if they are travel
ing in the same direction as
the bus. After having stopped,
vehicles must not proceed as
long as any children are leav
ing -the bus or crossing the
highway.
Oregon, law also contains
the provision that a designat
ed -speed of 20 miles per hour
or less must be observed when
passing school buildings,
grounds or street crossings
"during school recess or while
children are going to or from
school during opening and
closing hours." .
.;. The significance of the need
for "all due safety precaution
is emphasized by the depart
ment of motor vehicles rec
ords showing that last year
'there were nine fatal pedes
trian accidents, and nine fa
tal bicycle accidents in the 5
to 14-year school-age group.

can reduce the danger to their
