Davies trimmed Elaine Por
ritt, Eugene, 2 up and Mrs.
Scott nudged Mrs. Richard
Grubbs, Portland 1 up.
Plue had birds on holes 11
and 12 in his win over Miller.
Odell was one below par on
three holes, sinking two putts
of more than 20 feet for birds.
Boals was three under on the
front nine with birds on three
greens. Gubrud muffed a
chance to keep his match
from going more than the
regular number of holes when
he missed a short putt on No.
17. He and Sivertsen halved
on 18. Mitchell had four birds
over his first seven holes and
was three under par at that
stage in building early ad
vantage. Nuich Scraps Hard
Creason hit the ball real
well and felt his game was
better than on Friday but he
met a dogged rival in Nuich
who putted well. Nuich didn't
have a bogey over the first
eight holes.
Marvin Clark was three up
in his senior match after three
holes but Moffat came back
to cut down the deficit with
pars through No. 10. Clark
won 11 to go 2 up but Moffat
took 15 and 16 to come even.
Clark7 then won 17 and 18
was tied. Brother Leland had
Henningsen 3 down at the
midway point but lost 10, 11
and 12 to bogies. Henningsen
then took 14 and 17 and the
match.
Both Miss DeVoe and Mrs.
Hammond had troubles on the
front side but took hold for
better games coming in and
Sue was two under par. Miss
DeVoe and Miss Martin were
even at the turn. The Medford
player , won No. 10 and 12
holes with pars. Then she took
14 for three up but lost 15
to a par. A birdie on 16
cinched the match.
Close Tangle
Mrs. Wheelock was in close
contention with Mrs. Ham
mond all the way. The rivals
were never more than two
holes apart. Mrs. Hammond,
who upset medalist Shirley
Siegmund in the first round,
took a 2 up lead on the out
nine but was 2 down to Mrs.
Wheelock going into 15. She
caught up on 17 with a par
and took the fray on 18 with
a bird.
Mrs. Davies wrapped her
match with a conceded bird
on 18 after Miss Porritt's ap
proach went wide to the left
of the green and the Eugene
eirl was short on her chip.
The former.champion pitched
nicely up near the club. Miss
Porritt had a 1 up edge after
the 13th green which she took
with a par. But Helen parred
on both 16 and 17 for a one
hole lead. The oft-time SO
winner took advantage of her
adversaries' miscues and out-
medaled here 81 to 84 with a
par 38 on the back stretch.

MEN'S DIVISION MEDALISTS-Alan Holmes and Dr. Robert
Buck, right, of Medford, tied for low qualifying honors with
71s for the Southern Oregon Golf tourney now in progress
at Rogue Valley Country club. Both have been eliminated
in match play. Buck bowed to Vic Santa Maria, Chico, Calif.,
in the first round and Holmes to Dr. D. C. Boals in the second.
Buck was medalist also in 1957. -(Knackstedt photo).
DEFENDING CHAMPION-Marvin Clark, above, of Grants
Pass, enters the semi-finals today in defense of his 1957
senior division championship in the Southern Oregon Golf
tournament here. He plays M. L. Hallmark, Roseburg.
Clark waived his automatically No. 2 seeded spot as defender
in match play and tried for medalist honors. He gained his
objective with a low qualifying score of 73 and was No. 1
seeded.
12 greens, squared her match
on No. 17 and won 18 with a
par when Mrs. Grubbs three
putted. One hole behind after
five were played, Mrs. Scott
took 6, 7 and 8 for 2 up but
she lost both nine and 11.
Boals Subdues Holmes
Dr. Boals, and Plue came to
the forefront as men's title
threats Friday. Boals popped
in a putt from a divot depres
sion on the edge of the 18th
green to save a 1 up margin
and edge Alan Holmes, Med
ford attorney. Holmes was
one of his division's top-seeded
players, having shared low
qualifying honors earlier in
the week. It was the feature
tilt of the day.
Plue knocked a medalist

Getchell and Creason mov

with sub-par games. Getchell,

day, fought up to bump Ko-
vacovich, Areata, Calif., 3 and
2. Creason won by the same
gap over Jim Buccello, Sacra
mento, Calif. Two down after
three holes, the Pennsylvania
resident birdied the next four
holes to go 2 up and also
birdied the 10th.
Extra Holes
Two of the Friday cham
pionship flight matches went
extra holes, Nuich., overcame
Craig Melby, Seattle, after 21
and McLean eliminated
George Cicrich, Portland, on
the 19th. Nuich and Melby
made three trips down to the
play-off green before the Med
fordite holed out with a par.
Cicrich was even par for 18
in his closey with McLean but
lost to the Coos Bay man's
bonus on the extra.
Bill Wilcox, Astoria, drop
ped a 40-foot putt on No. 17
to oust Bill McNalley, King
City, Calif., 2 and 1.
Dr. Boals was one of three
Medford medics to go into
Saturday's third round. Dr.
Miller nicked Jess Thomsen,
Sonoma, Calif., 1 up, hangipg
on after taking 'a 3 up gap
on 14 with a 30-foot putt. Dr.
Odell gained the same edge
on Jerry Cundari, Portland,
ex-state junior champion. He
lost a 3 up bulge by missing
three short putts on the back
nine but won on 18 when he
chipped within inches of the
cup and carded a bird.
The local medics were join
ed by a dentist member of the
home links when Dr. Stanley
defeated Bob Wittenberg,
Portland, 3 and 2. Keith Gub
rud, Eugene, runner-up in the
Oregon Golf association and
Oregon coast tourney's this
summer, was three over par
in beating Jim Sheldon, Med
ford 1 up.
Boals was 2 down to Holmes
at the turn of the Friday fea
ture. The attorney had taken
No. 1 with an eagle and had
chipped in for a bird on No. 2.
Boals birdied 10 and 11 to
catch up and won the 15th
when Holmes was short of the
green off the tee.
Getchel levened with Ko
vacovich with birds on No. 9
and 10 holes. He nopped to 1
up on 13 with a par when his
foe hit into the woods. A bird
gave Getchell 15 and the
match ended on 16 when Ko
vacovich flubbed a short putt.
The victor was one under
standard.

. For what other club could
commit four errors, have 13
men strike out, watch its
pitcher commit a balk as well
as a two-base miscue and

It happened Friday night at
Seals Stadium where a crowd
of 18,433 watched Don Drys
dale win the fifth straight
game of his big comeback de
spite several embarrassing
moments.
