Recent Surveys Indicate That
Mixed Marriages Are
By LOUIS CASSELS
United Press International
When a Protestant boy falls
In love with a Catholic girl,
neither of them likes to be
told an interfatih marriage is
a perilous undertaking.
But that's precisely the ad
vice they'd probably get if
he consulted his pastor and
she consulted her priest.
"Mixed marriages' are in
creasingly common in this
country where Protestant and
Catholic children grow up in
the same neighborhoods, par
ticipate in the same commu
nity events, and often attend
the same schools or colleges.
According to the official
Catholic Directory, one-fourth
of all marriages in Catholic
churches involve "mixed" cou
ples. The figure does not in
clude the large number of
Catholics who marry non
Catholics in civil or Protes
tant ceremonies.
Source of Tension
Some inter-faith marriages
work out fine. But clergy
men of both faiths say a dif
ference of religion often be
comes a serious source of ten
sion. This .assertion is sup
ported by at least three sep
arate surveys in Michigan,

Maryland and Washington
state which show divorce
and separation rates run
about three times higher in
mixed marriages than in those
where husband and wife are
of the same faith.
Pastors and priests also
are troubled by evidence
many "mixed" couples solve
their ' problem by turning
away from religion alto
gether. A Catholic bishops' com
mittee conducted a 10-year
survey of this problem. It
concluded about 30 per cent
of Catholics who marry non
Catholics are "lost " to the
faith."
A Methodist sociologist.

other fourth had not attended

Unstable
both parents were Catholics,
92 per cent of their sons also
were practicing Catholics.
Where both parents were Pro
testants, 68 per cent of their
sons were practicing Protes
tants. But in "mixed" fami
lies, only 34 per cent of the
sons were practicing mem
bers of either faith.
The spiritual perils of a
mixed marriage are officially
recognized by the Catholic
church. Its Canon 1060 for
bids a Catholic to enter into
a mixed marriage without
special dispensation. This is
granted .only in cases where
the non-Catholic partner to
the marriage signs a pre-nup-tial
contract guaranteeing the
faith of the Catholic partner
will not be "perverted" and
all children born to the cou
ple will be "baptized and
brought up in the Catholic
faith."
Provokes Resentment
Canon 1060 has provoked
widespread resentment
among Protestants. Its exist
ence is often cited by Protes
tant clergymen as a main rea
son for their opposition to
mixed marriages.
The Episcopal church has
issued a pamphlet warning
its young members they will
deny the validity of their
own faith if they sign a pre
marital agreement in which
they surrender any voice in
the upbringing of their chil
dren. The most renent Protestant
reply was made in West Ger
many where there is a grow
ing number of inter-faith
marriages. The West German
Conference of Lutheran Bish
ops objected sharply to what
it called Catholic "pressure"
on Protestant partners to
solve the problem.
The bishops' statement con
cluded with a plea to Luther
ans to "remain loyal" to their
own church and to "insist"
their children be brought up
as Protestants.
Take a close look at a
church hymnal some day and
you'll see why music is called
"the universal language."
There is no denominational
gulf so wide that it can't be
bridged by a good hymn.
The fact that Christians
are more united when they
sing than any other time is
demonstrated by a new hym
nal recently adopted by eight
major Lutheran bodies asso
ciated in the National Luth
eran Council.
Martin Luther is represent
ed by seven hymns, including
"A Mighty Fortress1 Is Our
God." But Luther is a minor
contributor compared to
Methodist Charles Wesley,
who has 17 hymns in the col
lection. A Catholic whose
work appears in the new
Lutheran hymnal, as well as
in many other Protestant
hymnals, is John Henry New
man, who left the Church of
England and became a Cardi
nal of the Roman Church.
His best - known hymn is
"Lead, Kindly Light."
The interdenominat i o n a 1
traffic in sacred music moves
both ways. -Most Catholic
hymnalsi of recent years have
relied heavily on music com
posed by - Johann Sebastian
Bach, a dedicated Lutheran.
.There are scores of hymns,
found in both -Catholic and
Protestant hymnals, which
date 'from the era when the
Christian church was undi
vided. This common heritage
includes the numerous psalms
that have been set to music,
and the ancient "plainsong"
melodies that may have been
derived from Hebrew temple
chants. A familiar example
of the latter is "Come, O
Come, Emanuel."
Perhaps the most "nonpar
tisan" category of hymns are
those associated with Christ
mas. It would not be the least
bit unusual, for example, for
a program of Christmas carols
to include the Catholic ' "O
Come, All Ye Faithful," the
Unitarian, "It Came Upon a
Midnight Clear;" the Episco
pal "O Little Town of Beth
lehem," the Congregational
."Joy, To The World," and the
Methodist "Hark the Herald
Angels Sing."
Hymn Writers Ignored
One reason why hymns
pass so readily over denomi
national barriers is that peo
ple tend to pay very little at
tention to the names of their
composers and authors.
Few regular church-goers,
for example, could identify
Isaac Watts. Yet many of the
600 hymns that Watts wrote
in the 18th century are still
being sung. And some of
them, like "O God, Our Help
in Ages Past," are among the
most beloved in the English
language.
Such is the anonymity of
hymn -writers that some of
the very best are remember
ed solely for their accomplish
ments in other fields. Every
school child knows that John
Greenleaf Whittier was a
great American poet. But how
many know - that - the gentle
