that he is doing what he
vowed he wouldn't do
I imagine all nail - biters.
like most heavy smokers, are
nervous, restless persons, who
have to indulge in some little
mannerism. Some have tics,
which are contractions of
muscles in the face or the
shoulders. Some swallow air
and belch it out; some crack
their knuckles, s8me keep
picking at the skin on either
side of their nails. Monkeys
in zoos have similar troubles.
One of them will nibble at
the end of his tail until it gets
red and bleeding. We all know
men who keep jingling keys
in their pocket. There was a
boy in my class in high school
who, as he sat in his seat,
was always jiggling one knee
up and down.
A relative of mine, when
she was in deep thought, used
to contract rhythmically a
muscle in her cheeks. Many
nervous youngsters chew gum
violently, and many nervous
men chew tobacco. Some peo
ple keep biting their lips;
others keep sniffing loudly.
Some men have to keep
chewing on an unlighted ci
gar. Many persons doodle. I
am sure many of my readers,
after looking around at their
more nervous relatives and
friends, could send me a long
er list of habit movements.
Why do we human beings
do these curious things? I
suppose to work off tensions.
A Family With
Mental Troubles
One of the most interesting
letters I have received came
from a fine woman who as
sures me that I am perfectly
right in saying that mental
troubles are commonly in
herited. She believes, as many
modern psychiatrists do, that
the brain gets poisoned by
chemicals that accumulate in
the blood. As she says, she
and her sister used to feel a
chemical imbalance building
up in their bodies until it
would upset them mentally.
The sister finally went into
a nervous breakdown. Later,
it was found that she lacked
certain glandular secretions,
and when these were given
&er, she was herself again.
-As my able correspondent
wrurs, "All my life I have
had to struggle with mental
illness. My father, a very in
telligent man, fortunately
gave me a stable nervous
system, without which I fear
that long ago, I would have
gone to pieces. My mother is
mentally unsound and once
attempted suicide. Her moth
er spent 20 years in a mental
hospital.
"I married unwisely -choosing
a psychopathic man
who came from a family in
which many person cracked
up mentally. Among them
there were three suicides, one
bank robber, and three
women who were sexually
promiscuous. I have five chil
dren, now, most of them
grown. They are all hand-,
some. My eldest boy twice
attempted suicide, and my
girl, who in some ways is
gifted, has already twice at
tempted to do away with her
self. My youngest child is
mentally retarded and can
not learn to read or write,

for years I searched in vairi

help us. About all that many
of these doctors did was to
hurt me terribly by saying,
'No; it is not heredity; it is
all your fault; you wanted
to hurt them and you did.' I
couldn't believe this because,
actually, I tried desperately
to help my children. In my
search for information I read
every book on mental health
and child guidance I could
find.
. "Fortunately, at last I found
a wonderful psychiatrist for
my daughter, and ever since,
he has been a good and kind
and very helpful friend to us.
"If the doctors who were
so sure they could condemn
me could only have tlived
through some of the things
I've had to live through, they
would know how greatly
heredity affects many people.
Your articles have helped me
tremendously to keep faith in
myself, especially during the
terrible years when I was
made to feel so guilty for
what was happening to my
children."
