Salt Lake City isn't going
anywhere in the Pacific
Coast league race this year
but the unpredictable Bees
have done their best to see to
it that Phoenix doesn't either.
The Utah club handed the
Giants their fifth straight loss
Thursday night, 6-4, to sweep
the four-game series with the
league leaders. The defeat
shaved the Arizonans' margin
over' second place San Diego
to only a half game. It also
gave the Bees a 14-8 season
mark against'the Giants, who
hold an edge over all other
PCL clubs this year.
Pads-Mounlies Rained Out
The scheduled San Diego
Vancouver contest was rained
out at the Canadian city. The
third place Mounties also
gained a half game on Phoe
nix and are now only three
games out of first.
Sacramento shaded Port
land, 2-1 and Seattle buried
Spokane under a 16-hit at
tack for a 10-2 win in other
games.
The resurgent Bees, who
dropped out of flag conten
tion during a disastrous los
ing string earlier this month,
pushed across a pair of runs
in the bottom of the seventh
to break a 4-4 deadlock and
go on to victory. The Hive
had opened the scoring with
a four-run burst in the sec
ond, but the Giants came
back with single runs in the
third and fourth frames,
then knotted it on Bill Wil
son's two-run homer in the
top of the seventh.
Don Kildoo, with help
from Eddie O'Brien in the
ninth, gave up seven hits to
post the win. Joe Shipley,
who also gave up only seven
safeties, went the distance for
Phoenix to lose his first game
of the year.

job done Thursday for Mil

two runs, Schoendienst col

Rush scattered 10 hits in post

season.
The Giants looked futile in
defeat, stranding 11 after get

fifth inning when Crandall
walked, stole second and
raced all the way home on

The 37-year-old Charles,

the third round and the
wound bled freely throughout
the remainder of the .fight.

Richard Manning, Portland,

Postponement, Manning

the union seeks "to bring the

Williams
Turns 40
On Saturday
BY BOB SALMON
Boston -GJPD Ted Williams,
one of baseball's greatest slug
gers, turns 40 Saturday.
He's still hitting like a 25-year-old
and at times still
acting like a 10-year-old.
However, the tempera
mental Boston Red Sox star
has begun showing some signs
cf age. True, he is currently
making' a bid for his sixth
American league batting title.
He's just a few percentage
points off the pace with a .315
average. He's whacked 21
homers this season, with a
month to go. And he's still a
fearsome sight at the plate,
his tanned, muscular arms
holding the bat as if it were
a swizzle stick.
But Ted ain't what he used
to be. A good many of his hits
this season have lacked the
old zing he was noted for. He
has hit and attempted to hit
to left field, against the over
shifted, infield, more often
than ever before. And his bat
ting mark, though plenty
healthy, is far below his .350
lifetime average.
What about Williams' fu
ture as he heads into his fifth
decade?
First of all, he'll undoubt
edly be back next season. He
hasn't said so in as many
words, but sTed has stated
often that his last big target
is still 500 home runs.
Only three players in his
tory have ever topped the 500
figure. Babe Ruth leads with
a fantastic 714, Jimmie Foxx
clouted 534, and Mel Ott still
leads the National League
with 511. Even Lou Gehrig
missed, collecting 494 during
his career with the New York
Yankees.
Williams is fifth man in the
standings with 477.
