day, Jim Frost, general man
aager of the Oregon Associ
ation of Broadcasters, de
clared in a talk at the Medford
Kiwanis club noon luncheon
yesterday. .. .
The radio medium of com
munication, he pointed out,
meets a good many urgent
community needs. Frost spoke
of the value of radio in emer
gency conditions and of its
importance in national de
fense. He termed radio as in
dispensilbe and stressed how
people of this country depend
on it for information and en
tertainment. Radio, Frost reported,
reaches into close to 89.5 per
cent of the homes in the Unit
ed States in a normal seven
day week.
Programs on radio today
are geared to individual mem
bers of families rather than
to members of families as a
unit. He discussed the abund
ances of outlets and choice of
stations which figure in ; this
aspect. i
Frost told Kiwanis of the
significant increase in radio
stations in the country ' in the
last 10 years, particularly in
the past five, despite the ad
vent of television. He men
tioned, also, that the average
household has three radios. -
The luncheon was at Rogue
Valley Country club.
Man Found Dead in
Car In Copper Area4
Robert Bernard Giffin, 74,
of 919 West 11th st., was
found dead from asphixiation
in his car last night in the
Copper area south of the Oregon-
line the sheriff's - office
reported this morning. "
-The victim was retired and
had been in ill health for
some time, according to Wil
bur R. Hunt, a nephew who
lives in Medford. The body
was discovered by Frank
Root, route 2, box 88, Jack
sonville. - -
Root told officers the vic
tim had been at his home ear
lier and when leaving had in
dicated he planned to drive to
the Blue Ledge mine.
Giffin had lived with a sis
ter, Mrs. Grace Irene Hunt.
Funeral arrangements will be

MRS. PEARL M. PICKELL
Mrs. Pearl M. Pickell, 75,
of 803 Sherman st., Medford
died Wednesday.
She was born in. Moravia,
Iowa, April 8, 1883, the daugh
ter of Eli and Amanda John
son. She came to Oregon with
her family when she was five
years old, and lived in Inde
pendence, Ore. Mrs. Pickell
attended schools in Indepen
dence and Salem.
On Aug. 16. 1904, she was
married to William Merrill
Pickell in Portland. They
lived in Canada and Montana
several years, returning to
Oregon in 1921. They "moved
to Medford about five years
ago. . -.. -
She was a member of the
First Christian church.
. Survivors include her hus
band, William; a daughter,
Mrs. Yvonne Haggard, two
grandchildren, Gloria ' and
Merrill Haggard, all of Med
ford, and one brother, Elmer
Johnson, Vancouver, Wash.
Funeral services will be
held at 10 a.m. Friday at Perl
Funeral home. Dr. D. Kirk
land West of the Presbyterian
church will officiate. Intern
ment will be in Siskiyou Me
morial park.

daughters, Mrs. Archie C. Ol
son, Medford; and Mrs. Elaine
Vik, San Pedro, Calif.; his
mother, Mrs. Pauline Larson,
and a sister, Cecelia Larson,
both of St. Paul, Minn.; and
six grandchildren.
