day faced a slay in a county
forestry camp following a
hearing on misdemeanor hit
run, drunk driving charges.
The youth was made a ward
of the juvenile court and
placed in the camp for several
months Thursday in a closed
door hearing before Superior
Judge Edward R. Brand.
Young Weissmuller, a bud
ding actor who just complet
ed a role in MGM's "Andy
Hardy Comes Home," was ar
rested a week ago in West Los
Angeles after his car left the
road and hit a utility pole.
Police said they found the
teen-ager hiding in the back
yard of a home near the acci
dent. They quoted him as say
ing, "My girl friend has driv
en me to drink."

Differs from Looks
Just because of a piece of
furniture may look awkward,
cumbersome and otherwise in
poor taste, one shouldn't as
sume that it is necessarily
without value. It may have a
very considerable value.
A case in point is that of a
friend who recently exclaim
ed indignantly over the price
tag on a chair displayed in an
interior decorator's shop.
It was $200, and what irri
tated her was that the iden
tical chair had been priced at
only $30 a few weeks before.
She remembered it well be
cause it was such a monstrosi
ty. Her labeling it that was not
unjustifiable. It was a square
chair with the back along two
sides at right angles to each
other. Three of the legs were
perfectly plain, but the
fourth, which happened to be
directly opposite the right
angle forming the center of
the back, was a very ornate
job in marked contrast to the
others.
Where it joined the seat of
the chair it swelled outward
two or three inches, forming
what is known as a knee. The
knee was carved in acanthus
leaves. The foot of the leg
was carved also, in the claw
and ball design.
Otherwise, the entire piece
was plain. The seat consisted
of a piece of worn but still
tough pig's hide held down by
brass tacks.
I recognized the type at
once as what is known as a
corner chair, an article of
furniture that was popular in
the 1700's and well into the
1800's.
But that didn't explain the
reason for the change in
price, as far as my friend was
concerned. Only the owner
of the establishment could do
that.
His explanation was simple.
His associates, who had priced
it originally, had not recog
nized the piece for what it
was, probably a product of
the late 1700's. He had been
away on a business trip and
fortunately had returned just
in time to price it properly
before someone bought it.
