DIABETICS
As I have been saying in
this column, one of the most
important things that is being
done today in
medicine is to
devise tests for
the recognition
of the person
who is a car
rier of some
hereditary dis
ease. A carrier
may not show
symptoms of
the disease
until he is in his forties or
fifties, and yet in his twenties
he may pass the tendency on
to one or more of his children.
A new test for diabetes re
ported by the Veterans Ad
ministration group in Dallas,
Texas, is the injection into a
vein of some sodium tolbuta
mide. A few minutes later the
blood sugar level is measured.
In non-diabetics ' there is a
rapid decline in blood sugar,
whereas in diabetics the blood
sugar falls more slowly. Ac
cording to Drs. Roger H. Un
ger and Leonard L. Madison,
this test made it possible to
distinguish between diabetics
and non-diabetics with an ac
curacy of about 95 per cent.
Tolbutamide is a drug that
can be taken by mouth to
help older persons who suf
fer from diabetes.
In Cancerous Tumors
For years, scientists have
searched and searched for
some substance which is pres
ent only in malignant tumors,
but never in normal tissue.
Now several Japanese sci
entists report that they have
discovered a new phospholi
pid containing spermine,
which they say is found in
Arts Dept., P.O. Box 168,, Old
Chelsea Station, New York 11,
