THE JARGON OF
SOME FREUDIANS
When I speak of my in
ability to accept much of
Freudian theory, several peo
ple rise up to
que stion my
right to hold
such' views.
They say,
"What do you
know about
psychiatry?"
Actually, for
52 years, I
have been as
much inter
Dr. Alvarez
ested in neuroses and minor
psychoses as in anything else.
I began reading - Freud in
1907, and ever since I have
been reading widely in the
literature of psychiatry with
the hope of getting help in
the handling of the hundreds
of nervous and almost psy
chotic patients I have to take
care of every year.
I, got much help from the
writings of the older giants
in psychiatry, men like T. A.
Ross of England, and Austen
R i g g s, Abraham Myerson,
Adolf Meyer, Stanley Cobb
and others in this country.
These men who helped me
much, all wrote in simple
English, describing perfectly
the complaints of the patients
whom I was seeing every day.
I'll never forget the morning
I found a book by T. A. Ross.
After .reading a few pages, I
let out a shout of joy and
called to my assistant, "Here,
look at this; here's a man who
is seeing .the same patients
we are seeing, and they have
been telling him just what
they are telling us."
When I finished the book,
I wrote Ross enthusiastically,
and for the rest of his days
we corresponded. The same
way with Dr. Myerson. When
I read one of his books I was
so pleased I sent for all that
he had ever written, and I
have read most of them
through again and again.
' But I could never get simi
larly enthusiastic about the
writings of .many psychoana
lysts because they did not des
cribe the complaints of the
patients I see. They kept tell
ing weird tales of Oedipus
complexes, penis envy, cas
tration fear, or sexual injuries
in infancy, such as no patient
of mine ever told me about.
The analysts say they get
such stories out of practical
ly every one of their patients,
but I have never been able
to do it.
Another objection I have
to the analytic statements is
that so many of these ideas
are just theories and the
ories that can never be
proved. For instance, how
can anyone ever prove that
most mental upsets are due
to the frights the person
suffered when he was in his
mother's womb? Don't laugh:
I have here on my desk a big
thick book filled with such
weird theories, all given out
as supposed facts.
As an eminent professor of
psychiatry recently said, this

sort of thing is not science.
In science a man must supply
proof to back up his every
statement," and other men
must be able to repeat his
work, and either confirm it or
prove it wrong. Dr. Freyhan,
an able psychiatrist, is one
among many psychiatrists
whom I could quote as saying
that the school of psychoan
alysis is really not, a science
but a religion, with Freud as
its prophet.
I cannot get much out of
psychoanalytic books because
so commonly they are written
in an almost unintelligible
jargon or' gohbledegook. No
one but an analyst could get
such stuff accepted by a pub
lisher.
