Air Force Says
Safety Mechanism
Failed in Fighter
Clinton, Mo. TPD The Air
Force said Wednesday night
a safety mechansim somehow
failed and an F102 jet fighter
zeroed in with missiles boom
ing at a target plane like it
was the enemy.
Two men ip the T33 jet
trainer target craft parachut
ed 41,000 feet to safety about
three miles from here Wed
nesday, escaping with minor
injuries. An investigation con
tinued today.
Three air to air Falcon
missiles accidentally fired by
the jet fighter, blew the sta
bilizer off the trainer plane
and it plummeted to total
destruction. .
An Air Force spokesman
said live ammunition always
is used in a simulated raid.
Heady to Go
"Everytime we go up we've
got hot stuff. When we've got
unidentified aircraft reported
we must be ready to go. We
don't play games and we
proved it today."
The planes were assigned to
the 11th Fighter Interceptor
Squadron from Duluth, Minn.,
and were training at Rich-ards-Gebaur
about 70 miles
from here.
First Lt. Ronald L. Svane,
25, Seattle, pilot of the F102
said he didn't know how the
accident happened.
The two men who bailed
out of the target ship, 1st Lt.
Jack Rice, 26, Evansville,
Ind., and 1st Lt. Raymond
Zuharas, 26, Sacramento,
Calif., said they saw the mis
siles leave the fighter.
They bailed out quickly.
Later they joked with Svane
about the incident and Rice
said "It was a good pass."
California Youth
Ends Bicycle Trip
Quincy, Mass. (DPD A Cal
ifornia youth, who completed
a . 3,600-mile bicycle trip
across the United States be
cause he "just wanted to,"
planned to inspect today a
nuclear powered ship named
after his home town.
Terry Timmins, 28, Long
Beach, pedaled nonchalantly
Into Quincy Wednesday after
noon wearing blue jeans, a
white T-shirt and a pith hel
met which he obligingly doff
ed while a reception commit
tee cheered.
The youth made the trip in
59 days and his first comment
after arriving here was "I'm
sorry it's all over."
Terjy brought an official
blessing from his community
to the nation's newest nuclear-powered
cruiser, the
Long Beach, which is now
under construction at the
Fore River Shipyard here.
The youth was greeted by
Mayor Amelio Delia Chiesa
and Junior Chamber of Com
1 merce officials. His mother,
Mrs. Juanita Timmins and his
sister, Mary Ann, 10, were
also on hand to surprise the
youth. They were flown here
by the Quincy Junior Cham
ber of Commerce.
Terry arrived here with
$25 more than the $50 ex
pense money he set out with.
Scores of people across the
nation helped him on his trip.
Insecticides Can
Control Curculio
Madison, Wis. (UPD Re
searchers at the University
of Wisconsin report that two
soil insecticides can control
the "plum curculio," a cherry
insect, without injuring the
flavor of canned cherries.
The researchers said the
insecticides, Aldrin and Diel
dren, are applied to the sod
around the trees and kill the
curculios as they enter soil
under the trees.
However, soil treatments
must be applied throughout
the entire orchard to prevent
the insects ' from flying in
from untreated trees in the
orchard. They recommend
using three to six pounds per
acre of the insecticides.
TO CATCH A THIEF
Detroit (UPD Market own
er Hanna Aljouny, charged
with selling substandard
meat, spotted one of his cus
tomers in the courtroom and
tried to use him as a character
witness. But the judge pointed
out that the customer, was
in court as a suspected car
thief. Aljouny paid a S50 fine.
