Decline of Dollar's
Purchasing Power
Fault of Congress
Blame for the decline in the
; purchasing power of the dol
lar during past years belongs
: squarly in the lap of Con-
gress, Lewis L. Huelsdonk,
chairman of the gold com
; mittee of the Western Gov-
ernors' Mining Advisory
' council asserted here Monday.
' Huelsdonk spoke to about
60 persons at the Jackson
County Chamber of Com
j merce roundtable luncheon on
; the domestic gold situation
.' and monetary policy.
, The speaker condemned the
: practically unrestrictive pow
er granted to the Federal Re
; serve System, noting that ' it
; has the power to create or de
: stroy money and, therefore,
. holds the power to bring
about inflation through the
over-supply of money; or to
produce depression by the
under-supply of money."
Authority lo Curtail
Congress is the only body
with authority to curtail the
activities of the Federal Re
serve system, he pointed out.
Short - Cut Talked
Into This Area
Ashland The proposed
short-cut between Highways
40 and 395 would be of tre
mendous value to the whole
Pacific Northwest, according
lo F. W. Loosley, president
of the Isaac Roop Low Pass
All Weather Highway associa
tion. The man from Susanville
told Ashland representatives
there last week end that this
would mean construction of
165 miles of road from High
way 40 at Winnemucca to
Highway 305 near Susanville.
The new highway would tie
in with Highway 89 from Su
sanville to Mt. Shsata and
provide a direct, high-speed
road into southern Oregon,
he explained.
The last section of the Fea
ther Lake highway is now
scheduled for completion of
paving in the next several
years, he added.
$650 Worth of Tools .
Taken from Parked Car
A tool box containing ap
proximately $650 in tools was
stolen last night from the car
of Louis Edgar Campbell,
' Grants Pass, according to citv
police.
Campbell told police the car
was parked in the alley be
hind Front st. between Main
and Eighth sts. He said the
tool box weighed 150-200
pounds, according to the re
Huelsdonk. secretary, trea
surer and general manager of
the Best Mines Corporation,
Downieville, Calif., was pri
marily advocating a increase
in the official price paid for
gold.
"Our present see-saw mone
tary policies are not condu
cive to sound money and the
longer we wait the higher
gold will have to be priced,"
he stated.
An Increase in the produc
tion of gold for the free world
is being needed more and
more each day. "as a patch for
the gaps which credit money
keeps tearing in the econo
my," according to the speak
er. Russia has grasped the
seriousness of the situation
and is going all out to pro
duce gold, he added.
Gold-Backed Ruble
It is now being predicted
that Russia will soon outstrip
South Africa as the leading
producer of g o 1 d,, and will
soon hold more gold as mone
tary reserves that the United
States, he continued. Huel
sdonk went on to speculate
that behind this move is the
realization thaat a gold-backed
rubble could possibly top
ple the prestige of our depre
ciating dollar in a trade race.
The mining man told the
audience that higher prices
will have to be Daid for eold if
it is to be economically feasi-

precious yellow metal.
ihe dollar today is worth
less than 50 per cent its value
in 1948-49, Huelsdonk said.
This would not have been pos
sible if we had a sounder gold
base, he contended because
"gold cannot in any sense be
considered a money of infla
tion, for its value is always
in physical evidence and this
tangibility cannot be offered
as payment until the cost of
its production is defrayed."
Among those present at the
Jackson hotel for the lunch
eon were Republican Guber
natorial Candidate Mark Hat
field and Mrs. Hatfield, who
were in Medford for a polit
ical rally.

Stranger Uninjured
In RR Switching
The unidentified stranger
was sleeping Monday night
under the south end of the
freight car when the South
ern Pacific switch engine
slammed into the line of cars
to make a coupling city police
reported.
He was apparently struck
by the braking gear of the
next car in line. A witness
saw him crawl out from un
der, the back of his shirt torn
and bloody. '
The witness asked him if
he wanted a doctor. No, he re
plied, all he wanted was his
bottle of wine. He crawled
back under the car, recovered
the bottle, and walked-off into
the night.
